Weeping Eye

My BC pup has one eye which always seems to be weeping. Other than that, it is fine, not red & no conjunctivis & some days it is almost fine. It has been like this for a while & the vets have never commented on it when he has been to see them...so I thought it might just be a puppy thing. Someone suggested it might be a blocked tear duct, but I thought I might take him to the vet's tomorrow & get it checked out. Any one got any other suggestions?? I have been putting Eye Clear by Natural Animal Solutions in it, but he is becoming almost impossible to do even though OH holds him for me. :(

I'm paranoid about eyes after Em had all her problems - most vets really don't know a great deal about eyes (and not because they don't want to they just have so many things they need to know about!!). I'd suggest seeing an opthalmologist as cost wise it isn't a great deal more than seeing your usual vet and you'll get a quicker more accurate diagnosis. You don't want to mess around with eye's they're really delicate. I know I was able to just book us in without a referral from my usual vet, so if you can locate one in your area it may be a good option.

But as I said, I'm really paranoid about eyes!!!!

Good luck, hope it's a simple problem!

I find in shelties as they grow they can sometimes get a weepy eye. It seems to happen as the head changes shape and lengthens and the comes right. I would get it vet checked but if the vet doesn't think it is something serious and it is not irritating the puppy just sit back for a while and see if it clears up.

Weeping eyes in Border Collies are completely abnormal, especially one weeping eye. If it was both it could be from an allergy but one eye weeping means something wrong with that eye. Could be a blocked tear duct, extra eyelashes or something else serious. A veterinary opthalmologist would be better to see than the vet because the vets don't have all the fancy equipment needed to look at the eye properly.

  • 2 weeks later...

Puppy is booked in for general aneth. in a couple of weeks time to have his tear duct unblocked. Hoping that is all it is...could be that the tube is missing & in which case they insert one so the eye can drain normally through his nose. Vet gave his eyes a thorough checking & everything else was good.
