Crazy Daisy Posted August 19, 2011 Share Posted August 19, 2011 Hi all, My son is very excited that as of next year he can start junior handlers. The problem is he is quite petite and when he stacks up my goldens he puts one hand under their chin but can't reach their tails. They are also very strong and fast for him. My daughter will be 7 a the end of next year as well and can start junior handlers so we got talking about smaller breeds in another group that would suit them. We all seem to like breeds in groups other than group 3. This got me to thinking about the logistics of showing a breed in another group. At Durack we have groups 3, 5 and 6 in one area and the other groups in a totally different area. Do people showing in different groups find it difficult? Is it possible to show both breeds on the same day? Is it stressful having to watch two rings? I know junior handlers is normally on in the break but I would be interested in showing the dog as well. Bullbreedlover Posted August 19, 2011 Share Posted August 19, 2011 My husband and I used to attend shows with Bulldogs, French Bulldogs, a Bullmastiff and an Australian Kelpie. I dont quite know how we managed it but we did. Sheer luck at times unless one judge was judging two groups.This was in NZ where it is permissible for a judge to do this in main centres. NZ also have a 250 dog ruling unlike here where it is 200. I found Durack shows very unorganised as far as ring set ups go. You wouldnt want to show Non Sporting and a Utility breeds unless they were at different ends of the groups without another handler. Link to comment Share on other sites More sharing options...

We have ACD's and Basenji's, and yes while they are breeds at the beginning of the group, in doesnt matter whether Gp 5 is first on and Gp 4 is last on we WILL/DO clash all the time ... I knew it would happen, but didnt think it would be as bad as it is ??? Sometimes it is the breeds clashing, othertimes its the Group Specials... It used to be good just having the one breed, (ACD's) so much less stress, know when you are on, be ringside, in, round, and out... Now I find myself constantly checking between the rings, making sure we wont miss our call etc, etc. I find Im not as social with friends, cos I always seem to need to be prepping dogs for the other group, when I would normally be being a social butterfly I would definately try to find something in Group 3 if you can all agree it something ... Maybe we will have to just do one breed one weekend and another breed another weekend. I can't give up the socialising as that's the best part for me. :D Actually that is a good idea, then I can still have my child free show weekends. Looks like two different groups may work out. Im glad I dont actually have the dog living with me because it would be impossible for me to show both breeds. It can be really stressful to rush between both groups. I love clumbers and there are some lovely ones in our group who I admire but they are still rather large. I was looking at smaller breeds under 10kgs. My Shih Tzu is a good size but we don't want the long show coat as we take our dogs everywhere and we live on acerage and there are lots of sticks and things that would get stuck in a long coated dog. For many years had 2/3 breeds & if they didn't clash for breed they would clash for group. Good chance that the Goldens would be over and done with well before the Pugs go in the ring. They do clash with the Rotties most of the time though . If you were in Vic I would be happy to give him a go with Charli to see how he went. Why not ask around and see if someone would allow him to show some smaller breeds for the experience and find a breed that suits him best. Campbell wants to show Fauves (thank the Lord) and will hopefully be getting his first puppy later this year. McKenzie, having spent some time with BBJ's little Griffon puppy wants one just like her. I've researched the breed and they seem like quite a good option, particularly the smooth version. We have a couple of years to think about it as I want her to be 8 at least before she gets her "own" dog but at this point in time I'm thinking her dog will be in a different group. I show a clumber and they are beautiful but they are also very strong and if THEY decide THEY are going somewhere I believe a smaller child could struggle to hold them.... What about a westie or smaller... a frenchie or similar.....if the children are going to be showing them and you might get caught in a clash at group times etc why not look at one of the more 'wash N wear' breeds... but in grp 3 you could look at a Brittany... If you want a smaller breed to consider a Field bitch might be the way to go, Moo is often used in junior handlers. If you want to stick in G3 - maybe a Lagotto? I have no idea how. Somehow, she manages to do the groups as well (they don't seem to clash - or at least not very often). Another girl here shows a Boxer in 6, a Shiba Inu in 6, then a Sheltie in 5. She doesn't seem to have group clashes very often either (I have no idea how with two breeds that start with Sh...) - although she has had the problem of having two of her dogs both win class in group and then have to find another handler to do "in show" with one of the dogs. I might walk around next weekend and see what is on right at the beginning of the show and well after the Goldens. We are normally judged just before lunch. A Dachieee!!! You know I want a silver dapple mini long! Unfortunately I always miss seeing the Dachies so am thinking they will clash. I might find one for Connor to use in junior handlers though. The Lagotto doesn't really grab me unfortunately. That could be a problem - Pugs are usually just before or after Lunch too.. still worth finding out though. Would he be able to manage picking up a pug and placing it on the table, they are small dogs but can be pretty heavy for the smaller kids to manage but I have seen them get help if they need it. Another idea would be a smaller framed dog like at Chi or Yorkie (grooming might be fun ;)) - at least they are early and later in judging so you would have a better chance of them not clashing with your Goldens.
