But how do you even implement a ban on all Pitbull Crosses? Who decides which dog is a Pitbull cross and which is a Staffy or Amstaff cross? Or a Cane Corso cross?

You can't it is beyond impossible. Ridiculous.

Simple. Round up anything with a big head, smooth coat and weighing over 18kg that isn't ANKC registered and kill the lot. Anything red or brindle will be first in line.

And don't think it can't happen.

Exactly! does no one remember what happened in QLD??

Thousands of innocent dogs killed, because of the way someone thought they looked, THOUSANDS!

Out of interest, because we are talking about Australia here, are there any Australian statistics re: dog attacks in non-BSL states/territories) (I believe NT, WA and ACT) vs BSL states and also what has been the effect on dog attacks in BSL states since the introduction of BSL ie pre- and post- statistics.

I would be interested to know if anyone has ever done a comparison.

This is not to take away from the horror of the attack and what that poor family is going through, my thoughts are with them today.

I cannot recall any attacks on people by APBTs in the ACT.

Given that apparently they'll attack anything, I have no idea how this is the case. ;)

That's what my memory was telling me and you do see a fair few red nose PB's (or crosses thereof) coming through DAS, so they are out there... maybe the ones in the ACT are just better educated ;)

I just caught up on the "dob in a pb" hotline idea. How tragic. I can't fathom just how disastrous this hotline will prove to be.

I know when I lived in Wyndham Council anything that barked along a fence line was at threat of being declared "menacing". If that's all it takes then god help us all.

I hate to scaremonger but IMO SBT owners should be f***ing terrified.

Your dogs will be next for all the same reasons - bull breed with the capacity to attract the kind of owner that thinks a 'tough dog' will magically give them a longer penis.

And so many pig ignorant BYBs out there prepared to sell them one or crossbred them with anything that breathes.

If you have one with no papers.. be prepared.

Would have education have helped?

There are groups in society that still street race, regardless of the strong message that it is unsafe plus with the impounding/ confiscation laws.

Some like the fact that they live on the edge, be it legally or safely.

And some lose their cars if they break the law.

If you tell me this dog was unknown to council, I'll be surprised. But when we write off the attack due to breed, what's to stop this owner from getting another dog.

And how did the fact the breed was already banned stop this from happening. It didn't. It probably just ensured that this dog didn't get the kind of socialisation that well raised family pets do.

Bring on licensing for owners, not dogs.

I totally agree with this, unfortunately whenever such a move has been mooted on here there is an outcry about people's rights to own whatever dog they want and who decides who gets a license etc.

I would love to see it and a comprehensive education system integrated alongside so that everyone can access the information and prove they have a basic understanding. Our learner's driver's tests aren't that complicated most people can pass that and it proves they have at least a nodding aquaintance of the basic road rules, surely something similar could be implemented? I learner's permit doesn't make someone an expert nor does it need to it's there to ensure they are not completely ignorant of the road rules and most of us do get through the day without smashing our cars despite the huge numbers on our roads and the inherent dangers so something must be working...

I live in an area with a large Sudenese community & I've noticed these people (both adults & children) are terrified of dogs even small ones. I'm not defending the dog or blaming the children but if they ran screaming (as I think they might have) it would have made the dog attack worse.

Sadly this will not make anyone from this community feel safer around dogs.

I agree I have spoken to people from countries where there is a relatively low pet population and a high population of semi-wild dogs (which can be quite agressive) this results in a community wide fear of most dogs which doesn't leave them when they move. It means that our demographic is changing and there is more need than ever for education, teaching people who may not be aware how to behave around dogs and what the rules are in terms of containing dogs. Many people wouldn't even know that a loose dog is illegal in most areas and if they have come from a country where there are loose dogs around they may feel powerless to report it.

SBT

Amstaff

Cane Corso

Bull Terrier

the list is ongoing and when they finish wiping those breeds out the idiot owners will go for another "tough" dog. It is a never ending cycle of infection that will not stop unless we start treating the cause - bad owners.

Those were the breeds that went through my head just after I hit post on my last reply. Basically if they succeed in destroying one breed of dog it won't be long before every medium/large breed dog will be on the chopping block and then gone as well.

I for one am not going to sit around and let them exterminate a fantastic breed of dog so that they can learn that breed bans don't work.

FHRP has been asked before if her Hungarian Vizslas are pitbulls.

Cos they're red and all....

God help us. :(

My friend's ridgeback has been called a pitbull as well

I was at one of the dog parks in the ACT when someone came in with a large crossbreed, and I heard some of the other people exclaim, "It's a pitbull!" and start gathering up their dogs. The dog looked like a labrador x to me  It then proceeded to come and roll over at my feet wanting a belly rub.

I agree.

I like ABPT's, I owned one years ago and he was a lovely dog and even though he had been badly abused he never so much a gave someone a second look.

However the GR we had as a child bit my brother and my Lab can't be trusted wth children or certain adults.

Blame the deed, not the breed.

Had a friend of mine come in to the shop she got a little staffy from te local RSPCA sweetest dog she is scared of what might happen :( so sad apparently her mum ran her telling her to be careful of her dog because it could be dangerous. Poor girl her dog wouldn't hurt a fly and she has no papers for her and she looks like a bull breed
