RallyValley
The thing that gets me is that a dog like a Golden Retriever is far more common in the average household than the pitbull, yet we see far more attacks and deaths from pitbulls than Golden Retrievers. I wonder why??? Could it be because it IS in fact a dangerous breed? I think so! Maybe leave it at that Matthew - you will never win here. I think there is a Poodlefan fan club. ;) Yes we are called 'Poodlefans Army' or PA and we have magical coins that tell us when to meet up and get online and blatantly agree, cause none of us have our own minds. megan_
While i feel for the family, you have to wonder if the little girls didnt find the dog wandering outside, and had a play with it then took it in to mommy to do the whole "can we keep it?" when the dog was cornered in the house it was unfamiliar with, it could have become fear aggressive? Or do the people that want the breed banned think it picked out a house with people home, and knocked down the door??? That is really sick. I agree!!!! That is a really disturbing statement Try another scenario. The dog's owner has been robbed a couple times. He, rightly or wrongly, blames 'blackfellas'. Any time a dark skinned person goes by and the dog hits the fence, he tells the dog 'good boy', and he laughs when the local refugee community shows terror at his dog. The dog has been out on a few pig hunts, and has poor bite inhibition. Oops the gate got left open. If this is what happened, in my opinion the guy is guilty of both a hate crime AND murder (ok, involuntary manslaughter). Can't blame the dog. The above is just fiction, but, I think, more plausible than your scenario. PF is right . . . the owner is the problem. There are instances of dogs killing children, but it's almost always a child wandering into the dog's yard; occasionally some horrid result of not properly introducing the dog to the baby. I think you'll have a hard time finding even a single incidence in the dog attack statistics of a dog going into a neighbour's home, killing a child, and harming other people. That is absolutely unforgivable. Far more likely scenario is that the dog was never socialised with people of different races. I come from South Africa. Before the end of apartheid, most dogs belonging to white people would get very aggressive towards black people - no one I knew ever trained their dog to do this. The inverse was true too. One of the things I like about PF is that we can openly discuss things that we aren't in agreement on like adults, without any animosity at all. Certainly not name-calling or insults. Then, if one of us decides the other's argument is stronger, we can be convinced by logic and reason. We don't even know each other in person! LISTEN AND OBEY DOLERS.. you are all under my control.. or is it Troy's control Seriously, lots of folk disagree with me.. lots of the time. Most manage to keep playing the ball though.. and don't make it personal. I never insult them or accuse them of ganging up on me though.. perhaps I should try that. If only controlling my legions of minions wasn't so exhausting. Oh Aidan.. a pic for you.. Edited August 18, 2011 by poodlefan
Pheebs
Sticking my head out here (hesitantly so as I know these threads get very heated) but I think breed-blindness is potentially just as dangerous as these incidents in isolation. I must admit to reading up on the horrible story of little Liam Perk and thinking to myself "But Weimaraners are so gentle!" and being genuinely surprised that this could happen. I then wanted to smack myself up the side of the head for being so stupid. I think therein lies the danger thinking "this could never happen to me". I'm quite confident that if my Boxer X escaped, she'd probably be quite spooked and be difficult to corner. My Great Dane, I suspect might respond in a fearful manner and if pushed, well I just can't be sure. This in itself scares the cr*p out of me and I put all measures in place where possible to ensure that my yard is secure, safe and well enclosed. I think the problem in terms of the APBT is the councils across the board have done a half-arsed job in imposing these restrictions and regulations on the breed and I would be very interested to see that of these recorded "incidents" just how many have been through the process as being declared a restricted breed. It's all very well to say these measures are in place to put the "general community" at ease but I think they've slackened the policing of said measures. ETA: I also think it's sad that I feel the need to refer to my Maggie as a Boxer X as opposed to a Bullmastiff X (which has also been considered) out of fear. ETA: It also goes without saying that my heart absolutely breaks for this family. Edited August 18, 2011 by Pheebs
Keira&Phoenix
A 'dob in a dangerous dog' hotline will also be established to enable to public to alert council if there is a suspect dog in their neighbourhood. This Is what I am fearing, how many Innocent dogs are going to get caught up In this Mathew B you have yet to answer the question That is what makes me sad as well Danni. How many innocent neighbour hood dogs are going to be reported because the next door neighbour doesn't like their owners. A hotline is a stupid idea and is going to see thousands of innocent dogs put to sleep over petty grudges or misunderstandings.
~Shepherd~
The focus has become about the dog. Get real, a child is dead, ripped open and killed by a DOG. The family needs support. I would like to do something for this family. Hundreds of people here that could put their heads together and make life a little better for this poor family. Nothing can replace this little girl, but I am sure the family would appreciate support in some way in the future. A holiday down the track, a gift, a kind word on a note? I rather fancy the idea that they might find some comfort in seeing procedures put in place to prevent similar tragedies occuring in other families. Fat chance of that. Quickasyoucan
Out of interest, because we are talking about Australia here, are there any Australian statistics re: dog attacks in non-BSL states/territories) (I believe NT, WA and ACT) vs BSL states and also what has been the effect on dog attacks in BSL states since the introduction of BSL ie pre- and post- statistics. I would be interested to know if anyone has ever done a comparison. This is not to take away from the horror of the attack and what that poor family is going through, my thoughts are with them today. Pheebs
Already happening Pheebs Oh I am sorry for missing your post I made my comment more as a generalisation - I don't really visit the BSL forum anymore as I can remember frequently wanting to bang my head against a wall in seeing people go through the frustration of having their breeds assessed correctly and fairly. The naive optimist in me had hoped for change but clearly it hasn't nor will it (PS: Love the cuties in your sig :D)
Atanquin
Omg that hotline will cause soooo many problems for innocent dog owners it's really becoming unpleasant to own a dog!! How many people will abuse it?
Little Gifts
I think it would be an amazing thing if the Dogzonline community could do something for this family so they know that dog lovers acknowledge what an horrific experience this has been. The tv reports I have been seeing keep saying there has been a call to ban all pit bull crosses. That IMO is a ridiculous idea. Any breed of dog could cause harm but it is the nature of this specific dog (not its breed) that has enabled it to attack and cause death. And yes I know that some breeds of dog have more strength but not every terrier has a desire to use their body type to harm. When will we learn from these incidents to manage aggressive dogs more effectively and ensure we know where these dogs live and that their owners have the skills and interest in containing them effectively? Charging people more money to keep these dogs doesn't ensure the owner has the brains or intention of doing the right thing for the rest of the community. I am so sorry to this family for their loss and the life altering personal experiences they have suffered.

Given that apparently they'll attack anything, I have no idea how this is the case. ;) Edited August 18, 2011 by poodlefan

Who decides which dog is a Pitbull cross and which is a Staffy or Amstaff cross? Or a Cane Corso cross? You can't it is beyond impossible. Ridiculous. Round up anything with a big head, smooth coat and weighing over 18kg that isn't ANKC registered and kill the lot. Anything red or brindle will be first in line. And don't think it can't happen. Disgusting. The day this starts happening is the day I stop leaving the house. Both my dogs will be on the chopping block even though one has nothing remotely "pitbull" in her.
