ArchieTheHusky
Well my Siberian Husky pup is 8 weeks old and he's had his first vaccination (C3) so I think it's time to enrol him in a puppy school. The local vet suggested Kintala Puppy School and I was wondering if anyone had been there with their puppy and experienced it. Also, a big question: Is Warringal Parklands in Heidelberg (where they hold the puppy classes) a fenced-off area? There is off-leash training at Kintala and I'm worried about him running off. He does come when you call him but he hasn't got the greatest recall
ArchieTheHusky
Not many people went to Kintala then... I expect too much of this forum
mushka
Not many people went to Kintala then... I expect too much of this forum we went there. It is very good. The instruction is one-on-one. The area is all off-leash and unfenced but it is a very large area and all the puppies get separated out and have plenty of space.
Cosmolo
Just check what breeds they accept- i know they don't accept some breeds but can't remember exactly which ones. The restrictions may only be for their adult dog training but good idea to double check.
poodlemum
Have you had a look at David Weston's book? I believe Kintala base their training methods on it. It makes a lot of sense to me but, when I was Obedience training my dogs it was partly with the aim of Trialling, and Kintala's methods are not suitable for that. Certainly when I was an instructor I based my lessons on positive reinforcement.
Talla
We have had one-on one training at Kintala with our huskies, and are currently enrolled in their IDA class. They have off lead socialisation at the start of each class and off lead at times throughout the course which has proved to be quite difficult for us. Although they have reasonable recall, it is definitely not reliable and with all the dogs tearing around and birds flying at the park it is such a distraction that we have to keep them on lead. aussielover
They don't accept some breeds? Not good IMO Also if the outdoor area is grassed it would be hard to disinfect which is why most puppy schools are held indoors
megan_
They don't accept some breeds? Not good IMO Also if the outdoor area is grassed it would be hard to disinfect which is why most puppy schools are held indoors Every puppy school I have been to has been on grass? You can carry in parvo on your shoes. I wouldn't worry about it being outdoors. The only way to 100% protect your puppy is for you both to remain locked indoors for 16 weeks - no way to live. Some schools ban breeds because their insurance won't cover them. They could get all-breed cover at a significantly higher cost, but that would send some schools out of business I'd imagine. Pretty Miss Emma
I was told today by someone that they will not take Staffy or Staffy x dogs in classes (they weren't able to enrol for this reason ). So there are probably some other breeds also but don't know which.
Nekhbet
I know Ruth Weston (widow of the late David Weston), she has her dog training school down from my place of work. Her current husband is a gem of a man. Wonderful bloke. Scottish.

ArchieTheHusky
If Kintala seems like a bad choice for a Husky (Off-leash at a park), then could anyone suggest another great puppy school with focus on socialization that is in an enclosed area. Please nothing more than a 20 minute drive from South Morang. Also, classes have to be late evening classes or weekend classes Edited August 21, 2011 by ArchieTheHusky
haven
Four Paws K9 Training has locations at Keilor Downs and Parkville, both on weekends. Would be about a 30 minute drive depending on exactly where you are according to Whereis, but I cannot imagine you would be unhappy with the services they offer. They have excellent trainers and are very knowledgeable about the importance of socialisation.

helen
The best thing to do is go and watch a class at a couple of places and go with what you prefer for yourself.
