I am currently on the hunt for a male French Bulldog pup and prices vary from $2500 - $3500 show or pet and regardless of health testing. Certain colours are also more expensive.

As I am after certain blood lines I am expecting to pay $3500.

My pups are $3000 regardless of colour from DNA tested clear and xrayed parents.

Stud fees can range from $600 to $3000 depending on the quality of the dog.

Staffordshire Bull Terriers. Range from about $800 to about $1200 for show potential pups from ethical breeders and up to $3500 for rare blues that don't bear any resemblence to the breed

Same for Border Collies. Show potential or pet puppies, regardless of bloodlines, colour or register are $800 - $1000 from the top show or performance breeders in the country who do all relevant health testing. Up to $3000 for poor quality unregisterable colours, with parents who are not fully health tested, from those trying to make out there is something special about colour.

BTW, the last time I was told in my shop (about a month or so ago)Cavalier/poodle crosses (won't use the name they try to pawn them off as) were $600....pretty sad when you think you can buy a purebred registered and health tested dog for LESS than a mutt off a puppy farmer!

I beleive the local going rate for maltese/shihtzu mutts is between 700 and 800 dollars. Bloody hell!

In new Zealand for poms.. trade me have lots from around $350 NZD up to $1,200 for pet shop ones.. quality is TERRIBLE!

to get a half decent one, will cost you at least $1,000 upwards. (although one breeder does sell hers cheaper)

for show? LOL.. depends if you want to win or not.. if not, then the 1k, if you do, then you have to go to our top breeder, who has beautiful poms. Shes not cheap, but hers are all imported AND she is one of the few who health test.

Or you import from aus, if you can find a breeder :)

Takes a bit to get established, in show pomeranians here in NZ if you want to do well.

Most of the beagles breeders I know sell puppies for around the $1000 mark and it's the same for pets or show "potential" puppies.

It seems a bit ridiculous at times! We spend an alot of money on importing semen, stud fee, freighting bitches wherever they may have to go in Australia. Not to mention the time and effort that goes into caring for our girls and their puppies, socialisation, etc, then you see unpapered beagle puppies for sale in a pet shop for several hundred dollars more :laugh:

Why don't you charge more for your puppies then?

Because you can ASK all you want for the pups...but the average buyer will go to those unpapered ones advertised in the paper, without breeder back up or health testing, simply because they are cheaper...after all.."we only want a pet" Charging more, doesn't mean you get it...unless you add 'oodle' to the end of the breed of course.

We have that exact scenario with the Cavalier King Charles Spaniel and the "Mixed breeds situation" is quite similar too!

So true, I charged a bit under the average for my last litter and despite just making it over the line finacially after deducting health tests, vet costs (standard stuff no emergencies or such), stud fee etc. I had exactly just enough for the next breeding stud fee and kept a bitch to go on with. This is as it should be but even so some people still thought it was alot for a pet.

I guess the amount a buyer is willing to pay depends alot on what their personal experience is with the pets they have obtained in the past, their current financial situation and the availability of the dog they want at the time they are looking.

Lets face it charging more does not work.

If it did we would be getting much more for our pups than we do now.

The public see things and then they go along with it. The oodle thing was just so popular. Just look at the publicity they were given.

We as breeders of pure bred registered stock are never given that kind of exposure.

We were given the......you breed to much.......you have to many puppies........we also went through the Don Burke problem....

then came along the Tail Docking issue where we were seen to be bad cruel people.

Many things go into our sales problems of today. The Animal Libbers have to take the blame also.

All we can do is to fight back with more pure bred health tested puppies.

Not only that we have many breeds that have no health testing requirements. No DNA markers.

Some purchasers get hung up on health testing. I have had arguments with purchasers who have been advised to only purchase health tested stock. Now it may be highly unlikely that I may ever breed another litter of Whippets but in this running breed along with the Greyhound we have nothing to test for.

We have people who come on lists like this one and learn a "LITTLE" then go off and tell all and sundry that "ALL" dogs should be health tested.

Heaven knows that English TV programme has done us so much harm. Because now many of the public think that we are all tared with the same brush.

The public have no idea that the breeders in the UK don't even have to be members of the Kennel Club in fact you can't be a member over there because they only allow 50 members and that's by invitation only.

When in this country we all have to be members of our states controlling body and standards and guidelines set out for us to abide with.
