you aren't comparing the same things when you look at grain free V normal kibble. You would need to remove the % of filler/grain and then recalculate how much protein would then be in that diet.

Oh thanks, I wasn't aware of that. Makes sense. I'm thinking thats a hell of a lot of protein.

I haven't heard of Innova before. Is it holistic?

It sure does do your head in trying to get it 'right', doesn't it? the more I read the more confused i am LOL

Yes its made by the same company that makes Evo. Unfortunately in Australia its only available through Pets Paradise and associated retailers. I bought mine from the local Pet Goods Direct store which at least does not sell live animals. Rather expensive but good ingredients. So far he is not loving it but at least its better than the Science Diet he was on. And he won't eat any kibble unless I top it up with something "tasty" :D

I asked this in another thread but might be more suited to this one. I am researching grain free kibble and notice that the protein levels are significantly higher - around 40% - in the grain free varieties. Does anyone know if this level would be too much for a 5 kg small dog of moderate activity level?

You also need to look at the feeding guides, you can actually end up feeding more protein from a food you need to feed more of. Here is an example that may help.

Artemis Maximal has 42% protein and for a 5kg dog the feed guide is 50g per day, this works out to 21g protein per day.

Canidae All Life Stages Grain Free has 34% protein and for a 5kg dog the feed guide is 74g per day, this works out to 25g protein per day.

Black Hawk has 25% protein and for a 5kg dog the feed guide is 70g per day, this works out to 17.5g protein per day.

It is also equally important to consider the quality and source of the protein being fed, if you feed your little dog a food that is high in quality meat protein, its far better for him than feeding a food with a lower protein sourced from things other than meat. High quality protein is also far more easily digested than low quality protein, another thing to consider. Hope I havent confused you even more:) Feeding your little dog a food that is high in quality protein should not be a problem.

Thank you - thats a good point about the feed guides. The Innova has Turkey, Chicken and Chicken Meal as the first three ingredients so I think that the protein is a good quality. I have started him on it now anyway so I will see how he does on it. I usually add a little something extra to the kibble like tuna or egg so that is extra protein as well.
