SheWolf
Also if the OP finds that she is not ready for this pup and it does in fact get too hard, I'll buy it from her, have my hubby collect it (so she doesn't have to deal with me) and intergrate it into my pack. This one has really got to me as I have seen it all too many times, resulting in the dog being 'put down' as having issues in the first 12 months of its life. Lashton, this is a serious offer, I am not all that far from Brookvale, if you feel it's too much, I will take pup no questions asked.

It has really got to me too SheWolf. 9 times out of 10 the puppy is always the one that suffers & ends up in the pound or worse. It just is so heart breaking. Good on you for your most generous offer. What marvelous work you two do. Edited August 10, 2011 by BC Crazy
aussielover
I don't understand why ppl think that a sbt couldn't live on an apartment? With adequate exercise and mental stimulation, I think they , like most dogs would do just fine. I've had a working breed in a townhouse before and my current Labrador only has a small yard. My dogs get plenty of exercise and my current dog goes to agility twice a week and obedience once a week as well as getting lots of home training. I think this sbt pup sounds like it will have a pretty good life going to work with the owners. It may be a good idea to look at some dog daycare groups or dog walkers if u need to leave the pup for a long time as you shouldn't really crate a dog during the day for more than 3-4 hours at a time (just my opinion). As for toileting- I don't really think you have to get up every 2-3 hrs. I'm sure that works for some people but I did not do that, I was instructed to ignore crying etc. Initially pup was in the laundry- I left her crate door open and left some puppy pads down. She cried a lot though and eventually i moved her to my room where she never cried or had an accident at night again!!! Next time I will be keeping pup in my room from the first night and toileting it when it cries in the crate. Good luck with it and try to enjoy the puppy stage, it goes so quickly:(

From memory, wuffles' dog Ava could also hold on for quite a long time. To be safe, I toileted both my dogs every 2-3 hours. Hoover was able to hold on for longer from an earlier age but Elbie definitely needed to be toileted frequently. Once they were housetrained they were fine to sleep through the night and on long weekends, won't be toileted from 11pm until their lazy humans wake up at 10 or 11 Also, when Elbie was a puppy there was really no difference between his: "I miss my mum" scream and his: "I am rolling in poo and am uncomfortable" scream, which was why I took him out regularly. Mason_Gibbs
I had to take my pup to the loo 3 or 4 times a night until he was 6 months old, it was because he has food allergies and had an upset stomach. Hoping my new pup sleeps better than mason did.
Atanquin
Okay I feel sorry for the OP all she wanted was some advice and ALOT of people on here are so quick to judge!! She got some great advie but I understand her last response. I I think I will be leaving this forum after this it's just silly the way some ppl act!! Give back the dog why she only had him for one night and just need some help as a first time dog owner she had done nothing wrong. We should be giving positive help not negative
GrumpySmurf
Lashton, despite all the bickering, and the fact that I am as confused a new puppy owner as you are. I just want to CONGRATULATE you for being here at all! Just think of how many puppy owners are out there, without a single clue or even the desire to get a clue. Skye GSD
Let him sleep on the bed :D !!!! All my puppies have slept on the bed and have been toilet trained within two weeks. Once the bond is there you can then start crate training. It doesn't happen over night but it will happen!!! Good luck.

lashton
Hi everyone Well, what a journey that original post has set me on! I have had numerous messages of personal support from the more friendly members of this website (few and far between). And once I have posted this comment I will be deleting my profile from this site as it seems to be nothing more than a place for fanatical dog owners to hide behind a username and fake profile picture and hurl abuse (err, "advice") at people who are trying to give their puppy the best start in life. You know who you are and you should be ashamed of yourselves. I hope you treat your animals better than you treat your fellow animal lovers. There are some people in this world who are dog enthusiasts (me) and those who are dog extremists. Get a life. You'll all no doubt be please to hear that I didn't follow much of the "advice" some of you offered - including sending our puppy to a shelter because it would be better off there than with an owner like me (ouch)! Indi has settled in beautifully, is sleeping right through the night (from day three!) and is well on her way to being toilet trained. At 10 weeks she is already sitting on command, she is performing beautifully at puppy school and is socialising very well with other dogs and loves children, in true Staffy style. For a while I regretted coming to this site for so-called help, being greeted by vicious, unhelpful and counter-productive accusations of animal cruelty! What a joke! I used to cry when I would hear my father treading on snails on the concrete outside my bedroom window and I am a regular volunteer at our local animal shelter. Cruel to animals is the exact antithesis of me. It is quite obvious that many of you people on this site have nothing in your lives but your dogs. And for this I feel sorry for you. I have a happy and full life, and Indi has only added to this. Once my husband returned after those first few days - when I had barely slept, eaten or been out of the house - you'll probably recall that was when I came here to ask for HELP... ...well since then we have bonded with Indi more than I thought possible, and I can't believe how anyone could even suggest we give her up! The issues I was experiencing are far from unique for people who are new to the world of puppies, and it makes me sad for other members of this site who may have taken that action after being attacked by other forum members. You are only contributing the the issue of dog and puppy abandonment. I'm just glad I am a strong person who was able to rise above all of the nastiness and prove you all wrong. I wish they had an emoticon for the middle finger, because that's what most of you would be getting

Thanks, but we have been taking the advice of our puppy school trainer and all is going well. She's sleeping through the night and goes into her crate all on her own when she wants a nap. It's her safe place.

I wish they had an emoticon for the middle finger, because that's what most of you would be getting Lashton, you said so yourself in your very first post that "You didn't want to get too bonded incase you had to give her to a new family. And this was what, 24hrs after you'd got her. Have you ever visited the Urgent Rescue section here on DOL? Seen how many staffies and staffy x's end up on death row in the pounds? Seriously, take a look. Maybe then you will see why some ppl here suggested you take her back to the breeder if you were unable to cope and already considering giving her away. We see too many beautiful dogs dying in pounds. And there probably are people on here that have nothing in there lives besides their dogs. That is not sad. Sometimes a dog is all you need and I am sure those people's lives are just as full and happy as your own. You'll understand One day ;) once you've had a dog in your life long enough to appreciate the love and joy they provide, and that feeling of completness they can bring to your life. Oh and I am glad to hear your little one is settling in. Wishing you all the best for the future.
