garnali Posted October 1, 2011 Author Share Posted October 1, 2011 The mayhem continues.... Jake is still doing well and now has a new off-sider.. A little kelpie pup who was surrender thru work.. Both boys have had us in fits of laughter as they do laps of the house.. All fun til they get under your feet.. Have had to start doing the puppy shuffle again. Will update wth some new pics soon.. On a sadder note My old boy Spud was pts last week.. Had a good innings ( 19 years) and was the best mate I've ever had.. He had lost the gleam from his eye and wasnt eating.. I knew the time would come but was hoping it never would.. I pray that he's sent Jake some of his fighting spirit to keep going.. garnali Posted November 2, 2011 Author Share Posted November 2, 2011 WOW... Jake is now close to six months old and the current regime seems to be working.. He's holding his own despite some quiet days.. He's become the spoilt brat though and knows he can get away with most things. I've attached some more photos.. The other dog in the picture is BJ who is now 12 weeks old and really settling in well.. Have decided Jake can start a new breed : TEACUP KELPIES !!! garnali Posted November 17, 2011 Author Share Posted November 17, 2011 He's doing amazingly well.. The other pup is 3 months old now and getting too big for him to play with.. He's had his first fight too !! Because he has been so sheltered his social skills are a bit skewed.. He decided to pester the other two dogs in the yard and all I heard was his screams.. Thought his throught had been cut but it was just his pride taking a beating.. He forgot how small and fragile he really is.. Not a mark on him though.. :D Guess that is the next step for him.. learning how to be a real dog !! Everyone calls him my child as he will seek security from me if anything goes wrong.. Think part of it is me not wanting to let him go too.. Have seen how sick he was and just cherish every good day he has.. Thanks for all the supportand I will keep you updated. garnali Posted April 23, 2012 Author Share Posted April 23, 2012 Hi all... WOW.. Jake has hit the 12 month mark.. cant believe it.. We've had our tears and problems over the last few months but I have learnt how to manage most of them and his best asset is another pup to encourage him to eat. If they eat he eats.. His only problems now seem to be teeth crowding and the scar on his back seems to be twitching a nerve occasionally.. Once he's put some more weight on he will be going to vet to desex and teeth check all in one go.. He is such a horrible patient these days that we have to sedate him even for an oral exam.. His newest friend came from Goulburn yesterday.. Banjo is a tiny cattle pup who was full of worms..First dead worm was nearly 15cm long !!!! If Banjo stays small he may be around for quite a while.. Cute little fella who is feeling a bit lost without his siblings.. Will try an remember to bring you updates Thanks again to all his followers.. Without you I dont know how I would have coped. And his little mate Banjo, is just gorgeous too. @ the 15cm worm. That's terrible. Poor little buggar. He'll be feeling a little lost at the moment but won't take him long to settle in with you guys. :) I am sorry to hear you's have had a rough few months and hope Jakey continues to eat and to be well. Please pass on some gentle hugs to Jakey from me and tell him I will be popping something in the post in the next week or two. And ofcoarse a huge thankyou to you Garnali for what you've done for little Jakey. I doubt very much he'd be here today if it weren't for you. As a sickly, under socialised dog he is now being picked on by the 'home' dogs. I have broken up numerous scraps in the yard and he usually comes off second best. I have tried only having rescues that are smaller and younger than him.. I've tried older sedate dogs but he seems to get under their skin and ends up screaming as though his throat has been cut whenever they assert some authority.. He is currently the house dog but it means I cant have the others inside without constant supervision.. He screams when put in the HUGE crate (for his own safety). I cant get a lead or harness to stay on due to his scarring.. He backflips in a thunder shirt.. Seems to irritate his nerves on the scar on his back. Dont get me wrong he is a lovely boy. He has been ill at least one week in every four.. This comes from his previous illness.. He gets infections easily.. I am attempting to get him desexed and teeth and scar accessed during a 'good' week. I cant even touch him on a bad week as he bites in defence while everything is hurting... He has bitten me when in pain and the look of fear is painful to watch.. I've tried treat/rewards for good behaviour but he is a poor eater & this only works occasionally.. My dream would be to get him out and walking on a harness to see the real world and have some positive interactions... Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.. I have had the heart breaking thoughts that I am keeping him going even though he is in pain and maybe he really wasnt meant to survive.. His bad days are heartbreaking.. garnali Posted June 7, 2012 Author Share Posted June 7, 2012 Vet thought he would have grown out of his problems by 12 months.. Basically his growth was stunted due to lack of ability to absorb calcium.. His responses are a bit like leukemia.. High white cell counts.. Prone to infection and allergies.. Food intolereances etc.. Biggest problems now seem to be his social development.. I dont think he suffered any brain damage as functions well with daily living.. He is highly anxious which can set off another bout of pain which shuts him down for days.. He gets a bone type pain that stops him eating and walking.. On these days he gets Carprofen & Clinacin, for pain & infections.They seem to help. I guess I'm looking for ways to socialise him with minimal anxiety.. Have tried him on natural alternatives such as herbal anxiety meds.. Have tried the thundershirt.. Crating him increases his stress.. Is there anything else people have tried that might help?? Have spent many hours and dollars trying to find a solution.. His current playmate Murphy is really tolerant.. He's about 14 weeks old cattle cross pup with a beautiful nature.. They still are seperated for short time-out periods so that Murphy doesnt get bombarded with Jake's full on approach.. Murphy will be a failed foster.. He's already one of the family. I'm thinking Jake would be best as an only dog with mature people who have the time (and finances) to manage his medical conditions.. Dont know that I could ask anyone to take on his issues though.. It has been a long 12 months so far and improvement has been sporadic.. He's still the size of a 6 month kelpie with pencil thin legs and minimal muscle mass.. Is anyone savvy with herbal treatments for the absorbtion of vitamins B & D ?? These seem to be lacking.. Have also been suggested to try selenium as an additive.. Has anyone used this?? Calcium absorbtion is also another issue.. How can I ensure he is absorbing enough?? ( Scars on his back were from sub-cutaneous calcium as a pup.
