Breeders Opinions Needed

If you buy a dog off a registered breeder to use as a stud dog, and this is stated on purchase, what would you do as a breeder if the dog turned out to be a non producer,

Has the dog has been tried with multiple bitches who have previously produced pups ?

I'm only new to all this but I would get the dog's sperm tested first of all and then if he's still a dud (so to speak) I would inform the breeder and provided they had no issue with it I would cut my losses, pet the dog out and try again.

Did you get this dog as a puppy or an adult?

I got the dog when he was 15 months old, he was put to 3 bitches twice that had whelped before, he was in with the breeders bitch before he come down from interstate, she didn't produce either, I have it an email stating that she would replace the dog with a puppy, which she has now gone back on her word as she now has a litter of puppies . I think that is why I am so upset, I have been waiting since February and she didn't even have the decency to tell me that she had changed her mind

Easy semen test & as a breeder this is the first thing i would ask for .

Also would have to consider if the dog has been on medications at the time of mating that can lower the sperm count.

Has the dog actually tied with any of the matings ??

He wasn't on any medications , and no I never seen him tie, he seemed to only go through the motions,he was tried twice with my bitches at different times, I would have had him tested but the breeder said he was a non breeder and he was to go to a pet home and be desexed

On the basis that you have no proof the dog has ever even mated these bitches as in actually penetrated and ejaculated, why is he assumed to be at fault? If there has been no known mating there can't be any pups. Yes I have had pups from slip matings but on every single occasion the people attending to the mating have actually seen the dog penetrate and held the pair together sometimes for a minute, sometimes for longer. Semen test for the dog would be a simple place to start, and do you know for a fact that the bitches he is attempting to mate are even receptive at the time he is trying?

Were the bitches Progesterone tested to know what day they needed mating ?.

Is the dog main or limited regestered ?.

Has the dog been on any medication that could cause this problem?.

"going thru the motions" may just mean he is inexperienced and needs help ..or it may mean the bitches weren't ready/

yep.

the first test is an easy one .. and will certainly tell you if the dog is producing swimmers .

"going thru the motions" may just mean he is inexperienced and needs help ..or it may mean the bitches weren't ready/

The bitches were well and truly ready, the point is the breeder that bred him classed him as a non breeder as apparently it is in her lines, she told me to get rid of him and he would be replaced with different lines, the breeder in question told me she would replace him in writing and now has turned around and said she is not, the question I am asking is, If you promised a purchaser of one of your dogs that you bred ,that you would replace the dog in question , then turn around 8 months later and say no, when the dog has already been desexed and gone to a pet home on the breeders advice

I don't really understand your question? Obviously if the breeder said that they were going to replace the dog, and you have this in writing, then yes they should be replacing the dog. Has the breeder told you why they are going back on this agreement?

I don't really understand your question? Obviously if the breeder said that they were going to replace the dog, and you have this in writing, then yes they should be replacing the dog. Has the breeder told you why they are going back on this agreement?

She told me that Dogs NSW said she didn't have to replace the dog which I fully understand as it is not a breach of rules,but why tell me to get rid of the dog then go back on her word 8 months later, would you as a breeder do this, I might be completely in the wrong in this matter ,but morally would you keep your word,

Hang on, you just said the the person concerned said to get rid of the dog and it would be replaced.

Have you got of rid of the dog ?.

Lots of breeders ask that the the dog be de sexed and when you give proof of the de sexing they let you keep the dog then replace or sometimes they ask for the return of the dog then replace.

Maybe it may be best if you return the dog and receive another.

The dog has been desexed and gone to a pet home as advised by the original breeder, he lives with a poodle who is also desexed, it was a very hard thing to do as we loved the dog and he did have a wonderful temperment,

Personally I would have had the dog tested and given him time to mature before desexing and rehoming. I wonder if the breeder had changed their mind on you having the lines for some reason - seems strange to me.

Yep that is the way it happened, he was just over 2 when he was rehomed
