Advice For A Neighbour About Problems With Breeding

I know I have read on some forums here about problems and expenses on breeding.

A neighbour has a pretty 8 month old GSD,(no papers) when I asked him when he was going to get her spayed he said that he was unsure as 'people' had been telling him that it is good for a bitch to have a litter.

I asked him if these people were registered breeders, or, even had a dog (they didn't, surprise surprise)

I did tell him if he thought he would be improving his breed if he had her mated, and that there may be problems with whelping that could be expensive.

He did say that she had hip scores done and that they were #2

Can someone here direct me to any threads on problems with breeding so that I can cut and paste and email him with some facts so he can make a informed decision (like get her desexed now! :-D )

Thanks,

B

Hmm there is a really good link on here somewhere about potential breeding issues like - your bitch could potentially die, all your puppies ccould die and you will still have the huge caesar bill to pay. hmmmm have to see if I can find it..........................

I'm pretty sure that 8 months would be too young for hip scores, and the people who read the x-rays won't do them for unregistered dogs. He can't "improve" the breed if the dog isn't registered.....improving the breed means contributing positively to the gene pool that pedigrees are made from, and if the dog doesn't have a pedigree, it can't contribute to that particular gene pool.

to be honest my Dalmation girl turned out to be deaf so we desexed her & she had no puppies & I don't think it made any difference.. she was a complete goof & sweetheart till she crossed the river.. she never had any major health issues either..

Thought GSD's were hip scored about 18mth???

Just telling him that his litter will help the pounds and shelter fill their already full pens...

Seriously what is more important to him his dog producing a litter or Loosing her on her firt litter or bleeding out if she is one the GSD's with haemophilia condtition (why I dont chip GSD's)

You can do PenHip at 5mths but it is relatively rare, I don't know anyone who does it. It is more normal to x-ray once the dog is mature and the minimum age for that is 12mths so I would seriously doubt a 8mth old is hip scored

That's the stuff I was looking for SecretKei (you beat OSoSwift to the post :-D ).

I may have got the hip score info wrong...maybe he is talking about the parents, I'll find out.

I think he is hesitant about breeding so the info may get a bomb under him to go and get her desexed.

Thanks everyone.
