Diabetes Insipida

Recommended Posts

Recently Tess hasn't been herself, and she's been drinking & weeing huge amounts. The vet ruled out diabetes, and got bloods done for a number of things (kidney, liver, cushings etc), and today all her tests came back all clear. She said that Tess probably has Diabetes Insipida. It's not life threatening in any way, just means she drinks & wee's a lot :)

Now I've heaved a big sigh of relief, I was wondering if anyone else's dog has ever had it? Apparently it's pretty rare.

I had a BC who developed this when he got older. It can be life threatening as they can't concentrate their urine so can dehydrate very quickly in hot weather if they don't have access to water. They also seem to need to tiolet frquently during the night for the same reason. With Boot I just made sure there was plenty water available and that he always had access to outside because of the frequent peeing. There are treatments but I decided not to treat because of age and he lived to 13.

I think this is what my first dog had. The vet prescribed something that pregnant women use, and I had to squirt it up her nose with a thin pipe. She was blind, so that was easier than it might have been with a dog who could see me coming... She had 2 courses of treatment and that fixed the problem.
