Crate For Newfie

Recommended Posts

Hi,

We are waiting for our newfie puppy. I'm looking to show (never shown either) our newfie and would like to crate him at night. The largest I can seem to find is for say a GSD or similar size. I know this isn't going to last long. I never crated my shepherd, so I don't even own a crate. So not much expierence in crating here. I have seen cages/crates for danes at shows, but where on earth did they get them? I also see people that do not crate their large breeds?

Just wondering what my best option is here with crates and do I need one for shows? What does everyone else do?

Thanks

Jess

How exciting! When do you get your pup?

I wouldn't crate a Newfie at night. I tried it for the first two nights when mine was a pup and she hated it - complained loudly! The third night I gave up and she slept on the vinyl floor. Never had any more noise from her at night. I think she was too hot in the crate. She now spends most of the night on the vinyl floor in our ensuite, or short periods on her hammock bed in our bedroom. A crate is probably ok for short periods at shows but they aren't big enough for an adult Newf to stretch out in. I bought the biggest crate I could find and she goes in of her own accord, but never stays in it for long. The extra large crates are also very heavy!

HI PP are you coming along to the State Trials next weekend at the Park :)

Can't on Saturday. Thought I might try and get there for a look on Sunday. Are you competing?

Yep doing both days with Orlando, he now needs only 2 more passes to get CCD :D

I'm one for crating a puppy at night. Teaches them to hang on and you know that they aren't up to mischief - size shouldn't make a difference as crates are available for giant breeds. As PP said though, you will need to make sure puppy doesn't feel too hot.

Dont forget photos

Thanks! I'll have a look at them. Puppy is only 2 weeks old right now, a gorgeous land seer. I will put up some photos :). I am always here going through posts for info.

Thanks

Jess

Lucky you! I'd love another Landseer. Where are you getting him/her from? Look forward to photos.
