Advice Needed For Constipation Post-trauma

 Share

Recommended Posts

Hi all,

Need some advice - our 3yo border collie was run over on the weekend and has a broken pelvis. He is urinating, but hasn't had a bowel movement yet and I'm wondering if this is a normal reaction to the trauma + pain medication? We are planning to contact the vet tomorrow if still nothing has happened, but just wanting to find out if anyone else has experienced this and what we could do? We've given him some milk on the vet's advice, but it didn't result in anything. He can't stand up, so obviously can't squat.

Any advice?

Thanks.

I would have thought the vet would give an enema if the dog hasn't had a bowel movement in 5 days. I have a catten that has just recovered from a fractured pelvis and he was fed wet sloppy food that would keep his movements very soft because the pelvis will have moved and the opening may not be as wide as before the fracture.

I found some suggestions here. http://www.howtodothings.com/pets-and-animals/a3361-how-to-treat-canine-constipation.html

Is he controlling when he urinates or is it just that his bladder is so full that it's leaking out?

Personally I'd be a bit concerned about an animal that's had trauma and can't pass bowel motions

Vet visit tomorrow . I wouldn't muck about .... How often is he urinating.... and do you have to have him in a sling..or is he just wetting as he lies there? How long did he spend in hospital? Perhaps he managed to poo there- but just hasn't gone since he came home?
