Another Vaccination Question

I have a 2 year old boy adopted from the rspca. He was vaccinated by them with Nobivac Dhp & Kc with a recommendation he receive a booster of Nobivac Dhp one month later. I have discussed this with my vet and he agrees not to administer the booster as I feel that there is more risk in over vaccination when the dog's previous vaccination history is unknown. Does anyone have any experience of vaccination issues with rescue dogs or can point me in some direction where I can find some information? I have only been able to locate information on standard puppy vaccination schedules.

I would not be doing another vaccination especially in a 2 year old dog.

can this dog be titre tested? Who knows if this dog was ever vaccinated as a puppy. Bit of a hard question really.

The animal shelter I work at always vaccinates and then again vaccinates a month later. We do this because we have no idea of the dogs history so we have to presume it has never been done. In over a decade I have never experienced any problems with the dogs from doing this.

I'm not a vet so have no idea how nessassary it is but our vets recommend it so we just go with their recommendations.

We never give two to adult dogs. If the dog is over 16wks, one C3 is all that's required. The only one that requires an actual booster is the Kennel Cough Injection, but if this boy had the Nobivac KC, which is an up the nose one, he only needs one.

The only reason puppies have a series of boosters is to catch them when the maternal antibodies are disappearing - it's nothing to do with the actual C3 vaccine requiring a booster.

A single injection should establish active immunity in dogs of 10 weeks of age or older.

Stormie I am not positive it was the nasal one that they administered but on the vaccination record given to me it just stated Nobivac Dhp & Kc. I will ring them and see if I can find out. Do you mean that just one nasal KC vaccination conveys lifetime immunity?

Nope, sorry, I just meant that you don't need a booster KC in 4 weeks if its the intranasal one. The injectable KC requires a booster 4wks later if it's the first one they've ever had, then it's just once a year like the intranasal.

He'll still need a Kennel Cough shot every 12months if you intend to go on with that, but the Nobivac DHP is a 3yearly vaccine, so he won't need another one of those for 3 years (at least).

The nasal KC vaccination is recommended yearly but does not require a booster.
