Mason_Gibbs
Im bringing my pup home in 5,5 weeks time. I wanted to wait until my pup has had his 12 week needles to take him out walking etc with my current dog now someone said just take the puppy out too as he will catch whatever my adult dog is exposed to even if he sits at home. There is no way i cannot walk my dog while i wait for the 5 weeks to go by until pup is covered. Thoughts???

fuzzy82
I worried about the same thing, but like you, not walking the other dog wasn't really an option, so I did it anyway. And puppy was fine. I didn't take my older dog to any high risk areas though, no training classes, dog parks, vet etc.
best4koda
Yes, I was advised to try to stay away of areas of high risk as mentioned above. Mine went out a bit but I considered the risks and tried to minimise the obvious ones.....love little puppies, bet you can't wait.
joelle
ooh good point! I didnt thinnk about this!. Does this mean no obedience or agilty for the older dog until the younger one is 12 weeks? Im getting my pup in 2 weeks and while I know my pup wont be going out, I certainly didnt think about limiting Flys activities! He is going to be demented!! 3 weeks of having to train in the back garden, I can see an agility run being set up in the backyard Thanks for raising this! If this were the case though, wouldnt you ahve to limit the older dogs activities prior to pup coming home as he might pick up something before hand?? I think Ill ask my breeder
whiskedaway
I thought about this when Hales came home. However I am of the opinion that socialisation is the most important thing, and I knew my Husky would go nuts without a walk. I checked how many cases of Parvo there had been in my area lately (the biggest vet in the area hadn't seen any for a few months, and considering they're an emergency vet I took that as a good sign) and I then took Akira and Halo on walks and to obedience, carrying Halo the whole time. She was fine.
Mason_Gibbs
My area is a bit of a bad one for Parvo but I am going to still take my dog to the park over the road, its not a dog park so its not too high risk and I just wont take my older dog to any places where there are heaps and heaps of dogs. Will also carry pup places that I can, he is going to be very heavy though so not sure how long I will be able to carry him for
Red Fox
Im bringing my pup home in 5,5 weeks time. There is no way i cannot walk my dog while i wait for the 5 weeks to go by until pup is covered. Thoughts??? I would think that a vaccinated adult dog is no more likely to bring home parvo than a person is on their shoes. Sure, you need to exercise some common sense, but I'd never keep an adult dog home for weeks on end just because there was a puppy in the house... Personally I believe that early socialisation is critical (you can't wind back the clock) and would be much more concerned with getting the pup out and about than keeping it home and "protected" until 12 weeks. eta: just to clarify, by 'out and about' I don't mean the dog park. But rather exposing (and neutralising) the pup to that which it will encounter in everyday life - kids, traffic, loud noises, strangers, different surfaces, steps, bikes/scooters/skateboards, new/strange/scary objects, birds, cats, etc.. persephone
I wouldn't take a new puppy to a park .. where folks deliberately take dogs to toilet .. but would walk them in busyish areas with good footpaths - areas in which dogs are less likely to toilet /be encountered. Mason_Gibbs
I must admit I am a bit worried about being overly cautious and keeping him home and not socialising him, I kept my current dog home until 11 weeks ( he had the 10 week shot) and luckily he turned out fine but he is an excpetionally special dog and I dont expect the new pup to be as easy. There are heaps of footpaths in our area but I cant be sure how many dogs walk along their daily etc.
Christina
There is a vaccine out now where the puppy has only the one vaccine at 10 weeks old & it is protected for the year. I used it last year on my toy poodle pups. Absolutely fine Otherwise I personally would not walk a puppy on the ground until fully vaccinated. Dog pram or carry. Mason_Gibbs
I did that at my old vet with my last dog but new vet advises against it as parvo bad in our area. Saying that my dog had that shot and never vaccinated again due to allergies i titre test and he has immunity
Bundyburger
Walk the other dog, but be sensible about where you go. My puppy got walks from the day after he came home as socialisation was really important. My boy got a jab at 10 weeks which covered the 12 week vacc as well so we were able to start going to more places a lot quicker.

I've never heard of it This sounds like a good alternative to the usual 3 puppy vacs. If anyone has the name that would be awesome.
joelle
I wonder how breeders manage ? They go to shows regularly and have pups at home? Who vets how many unvaccinated dogs have been on the grounds before the shows?
Mason_Gibbs
The lab pups that show go to the canine centre from 12 weeks
joelle
I was thinking more of the pups at the 5-8 weeks age group who stay home while the owners show the adult dogs. Are they at risk of bringing disease home to the pups from the shows?
Mason_Gibbs
I guess its possible Joelle
