Vet?

I had a dog with a wound that looked like that, only I didn't find it under all his fur for about 4 days when my border collie cleaned it up for him and I checked to see what all the licking was about. It looked nasty and sat right open so off to the vet we went sure we would need stitches, anyway the vet said he could stitch it if I wanted but it would heal by itself (which I found a bit hard to believe since it was sitting so open but do prefer to let things heal by themselves if they will) and gave us some AB's and instructions not to let it scab over. So I watched it, Anna made sure it didn't scab over :vomit: and sure enough, day by day it closed alittle until a week later it was totally closed over.

A stapler would have been handy!

I travel with a skin stapler for those just in case accidents when away from home.

Me too. Clippers, chlorhex solution and stapler, along with ab's.

+ a bloat kit and Linda's number to calm me down lol

$233 seems pretty reasonable for a Saturday night procedure - and it looks like a pretty neat job too.

The last time I had to get a dog stitched up after hours, it cost me $150 - and the dog wasn't sedated - and it was some years ago when $150 was worth something... *grin*

At least she won't need a bucket on her head to stop her licking at the wound... hehe!

Ask yourself this - would you like to have a gash in your head and not have it seen by a Dr?

If you have to ask - should I go to the vet, the answer is YES!

True but I'm used to the horses a gash like that on them wouldn't get down to bone and most of the time can't be stitched anyway so they rarely get the vet for flesh wounds. I'm not as savvy with the doggies first aid so I though I'd check with doggy people but yeah it's better to be safe than sorry :)

tdierikx yeah I though that was a pretty good price for the weekend callout, not that I would know what a weekday appointment costs because when my animals need a vet it's pretty much always been on a weekend or public holiday lol!

I don't have one but it would still be no good for me. I have had staples instead of stitches and passed out when the staples were removed. I would vomit if I had to use the staple gun on anything - so would have to pay a vet bill instead.

I have had very little to do with dog injuries and even though it has been over 20 yrs since I had horses, some of the things they can do to themselves on fences are awful. WnH, I know what you mean - on a horse that would be no big deal but on a dog I would be off to the vets too. Glad all is well now.

If you're going to staple or suture anything shut, make sure you clean & explore the wound really, really well first. Anything that is contaminated shouldn't be closed up, or you'll cause more problems than you solve.

If there was a vet close by I would be at the vet and not stapling myself.

Some of the shows we go to are ages away from a vet, it's a just in case and hope to god you never have to use it thing.
