I gave a sample of Black Hawk today to a lady who's dog is currently on Hills Science Diet as it has crystals in its urine. It is currently costing her $105 for 8 kilos of Hills SD, so she was very interested in the Black Hawk. So I told her I would ask if anyone else has fed BH to a dog with a similar problem. Thanks :)

If the dog has crystals in its urine it is on the Science diet to keep its urine at a specific pH. This may be alkaline OR acidic depending on the composition of the crystals in question. She should not be changing the diet without consulting with her vet as even just feeding treats can disrupt the pH levels with the consequence of the crystals turning to stones and blocking the urethra

Agreed. It's got nothing to do with one food being better than the other. If I were you Sheena I would give her a call asap and advise her not to feed the BH. While Black Hawk is a good maintenance food it does not replace the value/importance of any vet prescribed SD range. Her $105 on SD is well spent when she considers the alternative

Yes, I did tell her to best check with her vet, but the sample was for her other dog which has no problems. The dog in question can't have any salt, for instance. Just thought I would post this question to see if anyone had any personal experience with it.

Sorry Sheena, I thought you were giving it to her for the other dog. :o

I think her best bet is to take the BH ingredients in to her vet for them to look through. I think she'll find she'll still need to feed the SD though, for the meantime anyway. It's brilliant stuff, I've needed it for cats before. Thankfully my cat is bright enough to pee in the bathtub when something is going on, so I can see the blood and know straight away. Apparently lots of cats do this which I think is pretty clever

I had a cat who lived to 22 years old - beautiful Mozart - he did this too and if he had access would actually use the toilet !! And in summer he would sleep in the sinks  - it was nice & cool I guess.

What is in Hills S/D that helps stop crystals?

For a minute Sheena I thought you were saying that BH gives dog crystals

noooooooooo....I was trying to think how to phrase that question & it needs correcting, but don't know how to do it  All this lady told me was that her dog can't have any salt, as the dog has crystals in it's urine ...she was going to contact me & tell me a little more about it, cause at $105 for 8 kilos, if there is a better one out there & it's not sold by the vets, then she is caught between a rock & a hard place.

ETA...have just corrected my title...hope that makes more sense

This makes no sense to me at all. Hills S/D has a higher salt content than regular adult food, so I'm not sure why she would be feeding this is the dog can't have salt?

Hills S/D also only comes in tinned.

eta - I'm not sure if the 'Hills SD' you are referring to is Hills S/D or Science Diet, but perhaps best you find out exactly which diet the dog is on and the exact reason, then we can perhaps come up with some possible other diets :)

Is this a Dalmatian? And does it need a low purine diet?

Some of the ingredients are Ok in Black Hawk and some aren't. Brewers yeast for instance is high in purines.

Maybe get the folks in the Dally thread to look at the ingredients. I don't know heaps about it but did some investigations when I had a couple of Dallies in my puppy class and I was concerned about what training treats they could have.
