What shall I attempt to collect a sample in? :o He stops peeing if I go near him.

Ahh, well i guess that does make it difficult. The vets are able to extract urine with a syringe that goes into the bladder. I have had this done to my dog and I know it sounds a bit invasive, but she was fine.

If you are not ok with that, then I guess you'll just have to try and creep up on him with a cup.

Amber is weird with weeing at night too. She will be fine for a week and then might go 2 nights in a row and then fine again. I set my alarm last night for 3am and also got up at 12. She was not an impressed dog about being put out for weeing and did not want to go at all at 6.00am. I had intended to take a wee sample to the vet this morning but after 30 mins outside in my jammies I gave up! She has no other symptoms.

Surely some dogs just need to wee in the night?? I know I often need to get up
