Kavik
Yep, the Paps I've seen at agility are not quiet! Zippy little dogs though!
Bjelkier
I love big dogs, but when the time comes for me to have a small dog I will be getting a Papillon. I've met plenty of them, they are smart, fast/active and usually not yappy like many small breeds can be. As far as small dogs go, I think they rock! Are you kidding? I've yet to meet one that isn't!!! The ones I know are all dogs sports dogs too. Try walking past the Paps at a show or watching one in agility, they have a lot to say. I remember an awesome little Pap from Crufts a few years ago. It didn't stop barking the whole way around the agility ring. I have a theory that the yapping makes them faster  :p

Dogsfevr
The Standard Long Dachshund is often referred to the Irish Setter in a small body. I have experience with both smart, loyal.loves the world but has that Gundog nature . Std Longs where used as water retrievers so very gundog orientated . Cavaliers are sporting spaniels so should be very gundog orientated as well ,shed like nothing on earth though & can be chronic snorers

aussielover
I'd say a Cocker Spaniel or Cav would be most similar in temperament to a Goldie. But both are shedders... I love the Mini Poodle personality- my labrador regularly plays with one, who often gets the better of her lol I'm not up for all the grooming involved though and they can be one-person dogs and quite vocal. Don't know much about Lagottos but they might suit? The ones I've met have been quite sweet. They also have demanding grooming requirements though. Kaffy Magee
I have a pap that is not really a yapper. He only yaps when people arrive at our house and when the other dogs are runnning around and having fun, but he is usually inside anyway so he doesnt get squished, lol, so that doesnt happen very often. Then again, I will not tolerate yapping, so maybe my training had something to do with it. He is probably the exeption to the rule, I show my dogs and have walked past trolleys full of paps and they all go off, I couldnt stand having dogs that yapped all the time and at everything. All others I've known though are prone to making a bit of noise. Love the Minnie Mouse Stafford!!

It sounds like the environments you are seeing the paps in are very stimulating which is why they are barking? Just a thought. I work in obedience and all of the ones I have seen have been quiet. I still think they are great. Maybe some pap breeders would be able to comment. By the way Minxy, I love Akita's they are my favourite all time breed of dog. Yours look magnificent! Yes the stimulating environments would get them going and a lot of the reported "yappers" seem to be at agility, but they have to be prone to it though because there are plenty of breeds who don't bark in stimulating environments like agility, too. I still love them, though. Can't see me owning one, but if I had to downsize a Pap would be it! So feisty and cute as a button Edited July 15, 2011 by RubyStar
Paptacular!
Do it RS!! Just look at all the cute-ness in the sig! On a serious note though, Blaze rarely barks. Minka alert barks at strange people in her house, Portia has caught onto this. Coco barks if you don't give her enough attention after coming through the door and Tyson doesn't bark terribly much other than in play. Though at his last show he wanted to bark at anything and everything whereas at previous shows he's been quiet as a mouse.
mumtoshelley
The thing I'm also putting into conseration is my mum is a neat freak and doesn't like hair everywhere. She also doesn't like smelly dogs. Which is why I am looking for a small breed that doesn't shed much. I do brush my dogs often to help with the shedding, But still you get the loose hair coming off just not as much. Rascal my chihuahua looses a fair bit of hair even with the amount of brushing I give him. I have meet a few toy poodles and they were lovely very well socialized kept jumping up at me for pats. They were even pretty good with Shelley wanting to play with her. In saying that I have meet 1 toy poodle that was good with people but not so good with other dogs.
