Canberra Boardin Kennels

Ok so I know this has been done before but I thought things may have changed since then.

Can anyone recommend a good boarding kennel in the Canberra area? My mum and I are going away and we need some where very good for our 5 dogs. In particular our old Czech Shepherd. She is very old and we are nervous about leaving her any where. However I think a kennel may be better than my 18yr old nephew

I dont really want to go the pet sitter way as I think it would be safer to have my GSD bitch in an escape proof neighbour free kind of enviroment.

I did have someone lined up and a back up but they have both had something come up.

Any one able to help???

I've used Yass Pets for Kuma - he was there for 2.5 weeks. They are fantastic, very switched on in regards to different types of dogs and behavioural quirks. Kuma came back well fed and happy, apparently he was a bit whingy for the first day or so, then just had a blast playing in the play paddock and interacting with other dogs.

We were really, really impressed. We went there on recommendations from two colleagues of mine who own/ed Wei, Dally, Lab, Bull Arab - they'd all had the same experience.

What impressed me most was that they weren't freaked out by the Akita stigma, they asked us all sorts of questions about his personality and play style etc, plus told us that they would only socialise him with certain dogs, etc. Didn't make an assumption at all.

Thanks Kuma I will look into them :) Not really sure about them needing much social time with other dogs, three of them are ok but the other two are not good enough Id trust them while I was gone.

Well thats good if they are comfortable with large breeds. I noticed one site said they wouldnt socialise certain breeds at all? Seemed a bit odd to me.

I have a recent thread on a similar topic here.

Someone has also recommended Langlords Kennels at Collector but when I tried phoning then, I couldn't get through. I've been trying to contact Yass Pets, too - phoned but they were at the stables so asked me to email but I haven't received a reply to my email yet. Will try again this week.

I can thoroughly recommend Canberra Pet Care at Queanbeyan. A lot of our foster carers use them when they go away and they are always fantastic. The programs for bush walks and playtime are great and the dogs always have a good time.

Be very wary of places that offer "play time" "bush walks" and the like, that you pay extra for. At many places if you don't pay for these so called extra's, you could find your dog spent it's entire time in the kennels, standing in it's own pee and poo and having it hosed out around them daily.

Go and inspect any kennels where you dog stays and ask to see the exercise yards, also ask how many dogs can be boarded at any one time and do the maths when it comes to the yards. A couple of hundred dogs and only a couple of exercise yards, doesn't add up

I know there is one kennel that has large yards for dogs and when I spoke to them are happy not to do group exercise with Lakota (she just came on heat and I dont trust her on the off chance she doesnt get along with a dog and Im not there).

However they have new owners so not sure yet how good they are?

Thanks everyone for the imput Im discussing it with my mum :) Where ever we go I will definately be wanting to inspect first and I will ask how many dogs they are taking on at that time ect :)

I've heard through the grapevine that they are dealing with a serious family illness. If I hear anymore I'll post it here.
