Christina
Not really as I don't do crate training, prefer a puppy pen with newspaper/puppy pads at opposite end however it was her first night alone so everything would have been new & she would not know where she was alone in the crate in the dark & its absolutely bloody freezing outside in the night, I wouldn't want to go out there to pee or even walk on the cold ground. Pups do sometimes wee in their bed if they can't get out or are half asleep at this age. Time & patience, give puppy chance to get orientated. Big thing leaving mum & litter mates. persephone
Poorlittle thing .. pups cannot 'hold on'. After her first whimper (when she was already bursting) it just had to happen! Edited July 13, 2011 by persephone
tlc
Possibly just due to new environment, getting used to things, you may have set your alarm to take her out to wee at intervals as she may only cry after she has been. One of mine never made a peep when she needed to go, when she got older we taught her to ring a bell to let us know she wanted to go out, she still uses it now 4 years later. Just curious, Compared to your pup, how big is the crate.
19Caz69
I know it's a big thing being away from mum, I thought I was doing all the right things with the crate all warm & cosy, a little blanket that smells of mum & the placed less than arms distance away from me where she can see, hear & smell me. Thank you tlc the alarm is a great idea, i will give it a go tonight, her crate is big enough for her to stand up, turn around & stretch out in, it's 45x30x35
Starkehre
This is why I do not crate empty on demand. I always set my alarm for 2-3 hr intervals for the first week, gradually increasing the first interval until it meshes with the 2nd one. This can take 1 week or several weeks, depends upon the indivual puppy. Boys can generally hold on longer sooner IME. Dogs are like small children in this respect. Once they alarm you, it is probably too late. The other reason I do not demand empty is dogs quickly learn how to demand you let them out when they do even need to go. I teach my pups from day one to trust that I will empty them prior to them needing to go so badly they wee. I never let them down. Best of luck with the little one. Ali
Also a consideration...you proably all ready thought off... They crate maybe to big, so the dog doesnt feel like its soiling in its den..
19Caz69
The crate is only 45cm long x 30 wide Indy is a 10wk old Cavalier, I think any smaller & she wouldn't be comfortable I am going to try the alarms tonight

Rebanne
That's great and the broken nights won't last for weeks! They usually sleep through the night much quicker than a human baby I remember my teenager saying how much work a pup was, especially at night, I told her not as hard as a real baby
percyk
i never crate trained til my last dog was older all pups for the last ten years slept on my bed with a leash attached..they stirred...id bolt with them to the garden very easy training but cold in winter lol during the day they stayed in a pen or the laundry with paper the last dog was a bewdy...took forever to toilet train but ironically is the only dog to actually go to the door and ask to be let out he was crate trained after he was more reliable with his bladder which took close to 18months crate training can be achieved later..it doesnt have to be from puppyhood...i just trained our mob to be in a crate cos our living circumstances have changed and they have to be confined for now..theyre all between 4 and ten years old sometimes things can be done in increments so if you dont have success you can improvise and approximate til you get closer and closer to your goal ours were fine with crating cos theyre used to be being in tight places together...the car...the laundry etc so crating was only a bit of a jump for them the hardest thing is to ignore their cries...once they know it wont work they will give up
19Caz69
Thanks for all the helpful advice ! 1 week in & we've managed to eliminate both the crate soiling & the alarm and now seem to be in a routine with only one wee walk during the night. conztruct
I think it's just what happens but pup will get there. It's been ages since I had a puppy to look after but I have a little fella (3.5 months) who I've got to socialise and start some really really basic training. He's come from an environment where he was in a pen so could whenever (are wherever) he wanted to a crate and he's done a great job so far - a few little accidents but it's to be expected. You're just starting out soon and I'm sure your pup and mine will get there . The biggest problem at the moment I've got is convincing him that it's ok to walk on cement - LOL. joelle
Thanks for all the helpful advice ! 1 week in & we've managed to eliminate both the crate soiling & the alarm and now seem to be in a routine with only one wee walk during the night. Well done I hope my new pup does it that quickly my current dog took a while but now rings the bell to go out. He also has realised that if he rings the bell someone will see to him.......so he uses that to his advantage! Haha
