On the plus side, though, repeat performance will put her in deep yoghurt and can carry a jail term.

It would be interesting to see a followup on this one. Pretty hard to get rid of parvo in a hurry.

Cockburn Shire is not the best run place. I seem to remember a couple councils . . . or was it a mayor? . . . getting sacked by the state. The poor rangers are saddled with everything from enforcing fire regulations, to looking into verge use issues, to running the pound and they've had high turnover. Not surprising that this escalated to state level.

Where does it say one of the consequences if she doesnt vaccinate is a jail term?

The West's article . . .

"Consumer Protection commissioner Anne Driscoll used the result to warn dog breeders of their obligations under the new laws and the consequences of failing to meet them.

“Ms Armstrong could face compensation orders and even imprisonment if she fails to sell only dogs that are in good health,” Ms Driscoll said."

thanks I missed that but it still doesnt stop someone else doing what she has done to date and thats what needs to be addressed not setting a system which is able to be used after the event.

Agree. It would be great if this situation could be prevented from happening in the first place.

My Googling didn't turn up any more info about the RSPCA removing dogs from this woman. Not saying that it didn't happen but I can't find anything to support that it did. It's possible that it's part of legal proceedings and not released to the media I guess? Only relevant info involving RSPCA was a few news articles where they were warning people to be aware that unscrupulous "breeders" (read BYB's) were selling sick pups. One dated back to 2009. No mention of Fay Armstrong's name until now though.

I don't know about anyone else, but if I was to buy a pet from someone, I want the vaccination card in my hand. But anyway, at the very least this article is naming and shaming her for being a backyard breeder. Hopefully when people go to buy a pet nowadays they might google the breeder/breed and neighbourhood to see the amount of recent advertisements have come from that person and can make a judgement as to whether they are on the level or not. Probably giving a bit too much credit to the everyday person. I am in no way condoning backyard breeders when I say this, but accidental litters do happen and therefore normal people will advertise dogs, but the amazing thing about the internet now is that you can find if that person has had previous litters and advertised them. Won't work in all cases, but I know that if I can't make my friends go to a registered breeder or rescue, then I make sure they do a little research on the breed/breeder, even if it is a simple Google search. If more people did that, then this lady will be out of business pretty quickly.

Sometimes it takes work to get democratic systems to work. But my guess is that IF people lean on key people in the system (organizers need to identify key people and encourage people to contact them) with the result that a few people get big fines, dogs removed, and / or get thrown in jail, backyard breeders, puppy mills, and pet shops will start toeing the line with respect to health checks and diseased pups.
