Puppy Food / Vet Recommendations

Recommended Posts

Hi All,

Our little fawn boy, Spencer is just over three months and he is beautiful. We are currently feeding him Advance growth Formula Large Breed Puppy as per the breeders recommendations. He really likes this food and he seems to be doing quite well on it, he is however on 5.5 - 6 cups a day and still seems hungry! but he is well covered with only last 2 ribs slightly visible.

We are first time GD owners and after all my reaserch I am just concerned that this food is probably not the best quality available and was hoping to get some advice on the Eagle Pack varieties and whether to feed kibble and canned or just kibble etc. I know this is what the Great Dane Lady used to recommend but since the sale of the company now recommends Precise???

Any advice on Eagle pack or other premium holistic foods available in Australia would be much appreciated. Also - do you tend to give any supplements. We are currently giving him Vit C (500mg)which i believe he will just wee if his body doesnt use it?

Also, any reccommendations on an AMAZING vet in the hills district in Sydney, Australia that has experience with Great Danes??? Our current vet doesnt have much of a background with Great Danes!!

Thanks in advance for any advice you can provide,

Bec and Spencer :D

Royal Canin has a specialist Giant Breed diet. Eagle Pack Giant breed is a great food as well.

6 cups seems an aweful lot of food

I would not be supplementing with anything as a good food is complete. The vitamin C wont hurt at that dose but considering dogs make their own vitamin C a dose like that I would be tempted to say is just money down the loo. Literally  I have raised large/giant breeds on Royal Canin and I think it's the best out there.

I think most of the Dane folk agree that the Eagle Pack formula is great for Giant breeds. I raised Orbit on it (he's a Dane) and my boss is still using it on his Newfoundland and is very happy with the results.

Without knowing who your breeder is, I can't be sure they know their lines and what they do best on, but I do know of another respected Dane breeder who uses the Advance formula on their puppies and so obviously happy with it.

Thanks for the recommendation, Stonecutter :) We have quite a few Danes that come to us now and my boss has always had Giant breeds.

You should come into the Dane sub-forum, too! Lots of experiences owners/breeders in there who are always happy to help. But there's a rule for new puppies, that daily photos are required :D

I have just recently converted Zsa Zsa over to Royal Canin Maxi Junior. she is a GSP, so not a giant breed. But, I was interested to hear your positive feedback.

Zsa Zsa seems to like it. Her poos seem to like it and I find less mess, more consistency and less volume. The smell seems a little less offensive also. (This last bit is important to me, I have had a few abdominal surgeries and for whatever reason, since then, I have a weak stomach. A bad smell will literally have me projectile vomitting. So, a poo which is less offensive to pick up, especially when fresh, is a bons.)

She also stacked the weight on the moment she started on it. I have had to reduce the amount I am feeding her to keep the weight in check. I was sticking to the recommendations on the packet, but it appears this is too much for this little girl. I don't want people pointing at my fat GSP!!!!! :o

Please come and join us in the Dane subforum - lots of Sydney based people there!

I second the recommendation for Pennant Hills Vet (where you'll find Stormie and her dane) - I have used Ian there for 5 years now for my danes and travel from the Inner West to there.

I brought up my current dane on Eagle Pack (but now feed Canidae) and was happy with it. Generally your breeder is the best guide for what food their lines do best on but some breeders are not as big on this as others.

5.5 - 6 cups is sounding about right - expect this to go up too. I was feeding 8-9 cups a day to a growing pup. And in my case - exceeding the feeding recommendations on the packet just to keep weight on.

Vitamin C can be a useful supplement when they are teething - I have only tended to use Ester C when it looks like my pup is going down in the pasterns.

Fish oil/ Omega supplements can be used and I know others use joint supplements a bit later on. If you are feeding a super premium food (like EP etc) then you should not really need anything extra supplement wise.

Thank you all so much for your recommendations!!! It is very helpful for a new great dane owner!!

Stormie - I will be seeing you in 2 weeks, for Spencers final vaccinations!! I think i will continue feeding him Advance until then (we still have a few kg's left) while I continue looking into the other brands suggested!!

Also - I am already a member of the Dane sub forum, i have been meaning to write on the introductory wall! I will officially introduce myself over the weekend and post some photos of my little man!

Thanks Again,

Bec and Spencie

I feed my danes on Advance, and they are both very healthy and doing great. There are other options that are also good, but I'd recommend staying with Advance if the breeder recommended it. They do eat ENORMOUS quantities at times through growth. My 4 month old puppy eats more than her 3 yo mother. Don't let your puppy get too well covered, its important for his growth not to have too much weight through a critical growth period.
