StolandZara
Looking for people's advice. I have two Labs. One is 9 years old and the other is 10 months old. When we are in bed, they sleep downstairs in an area that I have cordoned off for them. It is at the bottom of the steps and early on we had to put some ply wood down on the bottom step as the pup was taking a liking to the carpet and wooden balustrade. We also have baby gates at the bottom of the stairs and against another wall to block them in. On weekends, when we want a bit more sleep (pup is only sleeping for about 7 hours), we let them out for the toilet, then bring them back in. It is not possible to simply leave them outside as older dog barks. If I put them back in cordoned area, the pup bangs on the baby gate or chews the ply wood. Both of which gives us no sleep. If we let them out in to the house, the pup finds things to detroy. We are thinking of buying a crate for the pup, so that we can get some more sleep, but am concerned that she will carry on if the older dog is allowed to wander. Should we crate both? Is 9 year old too late to crate a dog? Sorry for the novel.
aussielover
Yes, i have crated my 1 year old lab in the presence of other dogs both in my home and at other peoples homes. She was fine and didn't fuss at all even when the other dogs were wandering around. She is already crate trained though. There is no reason why you couldn't crate train both. Is it possible to leave the pup outside (maybe with a nice bone or kong or something to keep busy with?) and bring the older dog inside?
Bilbo Baggins
Yep I have dogs crated and not crated and they all survive. As suggested train them both.
fuzzy82
My 11 month old is crated and has been since day one. My nearly 2 year old has never been crated. They don't seem to mind at all.

whiskedaway
At night, the lappie (7 months) is crated, the Sibe (16 months) is allowed to go where she likes. She normally sleeps under the bed, but last night she put herself to bed in her crate downstairs. The lappie won't have the door opened until I'm 100% certain I can trust her (currently am at about 95%, so it will probably be soon) but I think she'll choose to sleep in her crate because that's what she does during the day. tdierikx
My Lab is crated during the day while I'm at work, and the other 2 dogs are loose in the kitchen. The Rottie X girl is segregated in a spare room at night and the Lab is loose with the other dog. The Rottie X will happily go in a crate, but she is fine in the spare room also. Both older dogs had never been crated until they were 5 and 11 respectively. Pickles the foster failure does NOT do crates - she has actually destroyed one by chewing the steel bars enough to get herself half out of it! All of my fosters are crate trained. T. Tay.
Just this week I've started crating my BC at night, only because I'm sick of all the dog hair on my bed  and that's the only way to guarantee she stays off. My Golden just sleeps on his bed and she's fine with him at 'free range' while she's crated. So I think it's fine. She was crate trained prior though. espinay2
I recently crate trained an 11 year old dog. And house trained him too. Until he came to live with us he hadn't set a foot inside let alone in a crate. While he is not crated at night now (and is only crated to be fed or odd other times), he still chooses to sleep in his crate with the door open. It is his bed after all ;) I often have dogs loose while others are crated. Youngsters are always crated until they can be trusted, while older dogs have free range. The older dog above was also crated while others had free range.
JulesP
Amber is crated because I don't trust her and Poppy is sleeping on her bed. Amber looveesss the crate and Poppy likes space so both are happy.
Mags
Can certainly have one in and one out. Bertie sleeps in his crate at night (puts himself to bed when its time) and Katie sleeps on her bed as she stays put (doesn't want her blankie to come off).
