persephone
the breeder is 100% sure that it did not come from his lines which just means Ike has to take it easy for a bit and the conition shouldn't worsen yay there is no 100% guarantee ... Toydog's post was excellent. Vitamins won't really help ... and his knees may get worse. They may also get better ! supplements like glucosamine will provide help for the joints ..and are a good idea if you are concerned, get a referral to a specialist vet , one who deals with these bone/joint problems every day - then there will be much less guessing . In the meantime, keep him lean, walk him regularly, swim him if you can , and enjoy him :D

raineth
I was told by my pedigree dog's breeder that "its the first case they've ever seen - no other dog they've bred or used has had that condition" but actually that was far from the truth. Which doesn't mean that your breeders aren't telling the truth! But it just echoed in my ears when I heard that statement again! What is the test for luxating patella - are the breeding dogs graded for it like they do with hips and elbows or is it different? I am glad it is only grade one
minxy
Kyojin has grade 1 luxating in both his knees, and there has also been some laxity found in his hips as well. Currently we are scheduled to go back to the specialist every 2-3 weeks for another 3 visits or so. At the end of it the specialist will decide whether to go through with surgery. The reason for the wait was to see whether it would be something that might get better with time as Kyojin is only just about to turn 1, and will continue to grow for another 6-12 months. OH and I decided to keep a chart of every time we saw him limping so that we'd be able to show the specialist exactly how often we see it occurring (luckily we've been home the last two weeks so we've been with him everyday) so that he'd have a better idea of whether it's bad enough to warrant surgery now or not, or whether to hold off. He said there are both pros and cons for doing it now, or for waiting. We had Kyojin put under anesthetic so he could have x-rays in order for the specialist to really see what's going on. I'd be dubious about your vet's opinion if you haven't seen an actual specialist or had x-rays done.
