Argh Lightroom Nightmare!

Recommended Posts

After rapidly running out of space on my hard drive, I bought an shiny new 2TB external drive and copied all my photos onto there - simple right?

Opened Lightroom and went to import the new location, fine......uh oh, not fine  No edits showing - aaarrrgggghhhhh

After some help from google and several moves back and forth from old location and using backups of the catalogue, I finally got it all resolved after a few hours.

So just a warning really - if you plan to move your photo library to a new location, google first and find the correct way to do it with lightroom, rather than just plow headfirst into it like me

Also make sure you have regular backups of your catalogue, as I would have been stuffed without a recent one ;)

I don't use lightroom that way, what I do is get pics of card, save into folder, decide which ones I want/need to edit then import them into light room, then once edited export back to new folder. I never knowif that's the right way to do it but it works for me and I don't need to worry about the catalogue Thingy. I have recently got a Mac and I use iPhoto the same way.

hehehe that happens to so many of us! Thankfully it's an easy fix.

Catalogs are simple but there's really not much reason to use multiples, I've found. I export a finished project as a catalog with copies of everything but that's just a redundant backup system that works for me. Day to day, everything is dumped into the main catalog and I have LR set up to back up on closing so it's easy and I rarely think about it.

tlc - you're missing one of the really nice things about LR: being able to sort and flag. I import everything in LR and start tagging with my chosen flags, colours, stars whatever. An X on stuff that's crap. Import is done, I hit the reject flag and it brings me all the Xs and I delete them and I get on with editing the ones I like. I can immediately pop keywords on images or the whole shebang at that stage, too. Doing it this way lets me go to one source in the future - LR - instead of having to go to the folder to find the image I might want and then importing coz I'm no where organized enough to totally be sure I'd selected every image I really liked from the folder the first time

LR tip: if you have your caps lock key on LR will automatically move to the next image once you have marked it. Very nifty :)

Wow all that went totally over my head  think I might have to watch some tutes on LR. I haven't been ding any serious photography latley so I have got out of the habit of it all and since getting my mac I have been using iphoto a lot more. Although I do love LR and I have LR5 on my mac now. It has annoyed me that I can't get the pics to upload strait to flickr and facebook but with iphoto i can. The option is there in LR but I just can't get it to work. Think I might have made a thread about it a while ago but no one had any ideas, I searched the net, Adobe and even sent them an email but didn't get one in return.

Hmmm, I don't know. I've only done it a couple of times and once it said it didn't go to facebook but it really did.

Check out Lightroom Queen and Killer Tips for Lightroom - maybe it's there. I'm running LR3.2 and LR3.4.1 and it worked from both of them.

Are you sure you have it set up properly? Maybe try again and see - sometimes shutting down and restarting is all it takes to boot the buggies out.

I must admit to finding the catalogue intimidating.. and don't bother using it . :o

I didn't know there was a choice? It's basically the database of any changes/edits/flags etc you have done to your files.

tlc - I export my pics too after editing, but it was scary to see all the pics in lightroom that I have spent hours editing back to their original raw state! Not fun if you want to make further edits

LR tip: if you have your caps lock key on LR will automatically move to the next image once you have marked it. Very nifty :)

Excellent, thanks for that tip it will be very usefull :D
