SparkyTansy
I haven't used a heat pad but I find the heat lamp perfect. Allerzeit my dad built the box for me. he said it was easy except for "the bloody handle holes" but he is a perfectionist and rounded off all the edges. I love the rails as well. pups would and still do (although don't fit quite so well) opt to sleep underneath them.
TrinaJ
Very simple "proven" design here. All materials from any hardware store. Easy to clean. High sides prevent escapees! I built this one years ago and it has done a great job and will do for many years. I love it. It has done a number of litters... photo taken this week. Mine was exactly the same except my door hinged to completely open out, because the cabinet maker misunderstood me LOL - mine was 1500 x 1250 x 400 I have nice sold it as it was too small for the amou t of puppies Jett had. I had wardrobe rods as the pig rail and used kitchen laminated board (waterproof) which was easy to disinfect and keep clean.
