RoynRuby Posted June 20, 2011 Share Posted June 20, 2011 Hi everyone. I have a pure bred golden retriever, he is 3 years old and has a lovely personality. However when ever he sees us inside the house or we go outside to him he does laps of anything that may be around, such as the outdoor setting or a chair. He usually also searchs frantically for something to carry around in his mouth. We also have a 3 year old female Lab. She is always well behaved and is calm when we go out. A lot of our friends and family have commented on Roy and his laps. We have tried to be more controlling and ignore him, but we are just not sure what to do, he has done this for as long as I can remember. My mum insists something isn't right as when you get him to sit down his right eye focuses on you while his left will also focus on you but occasionally flick up?? He is also in good health. My GR is 2 yrs old and he gets so excited to see us that he can't wait to go and find something to carry in his mouth and bring to us, the whole time making this woeful noise. I generally ignore him and he settles very quickly. Both my GR's have to have something to carry in their mouth all the time, and will often go and fetch something to bring to me, just because they can. They have a very strong retrieving instinct. I also have Labs. and they do not display the same behaviour as the GR. I do work all my dogs, so they have an outlet for their excitement and energy. Sounds like Roy needs something stimulating to do. Maybe do some obedience with him, or agility, to focus his energy into something productive. But, certainly dont worry about the circles or his searching for an article, he is just trying to please you, and, he is a very young Goldie boy. They take time to mature. Any ideas?? Thanks Michelle. The first behaviours you described sound entirely normal :D My lab also does this, she is rather a hyper thing though... The bolded bit though sounds a bit abnormal and perhaps it is something you should get checked by a vet. Generally things like you have described are vestibular or involve the cranial nerves and/or brain or the eye muscles themselves. I would defintiely raise my concerns with a vet. RoynRuby Posted June 21, 2011 Author Share Posted June 21, 2011 Thanks for your answers guys. I really appreciate it. I actually took Roy to the vet today and they have picked up he has cataracts. The Vet was a little concerned about his eye flicking and thinks he may have a slight neurological problem, however he seems pretty good, shes unsure whether it may be due to the cataracts or a neurological concern.
