Olivebaby Posted June 18, 2011 Share Posted June 18, 2011 Hi. Sorry in advance this is a bit of a gross subject. My 19 week old lab had a few accidents over night last night (number 2s) she hasn't had an accident for over a month so I found this really weird. They were very very soft. Now today she has had another accident in the house. Still soft but this time with fresh blood (just a small amount) and also mucous. Yuk! Sorry again. The only thing in her diet that is different is yesterday I gave her a small amount of black hawk with her other kibble. Maybe this caused the soft stool but what would cause the blood? She has been off food all day and all she ate was a piece of toast. She is looking a bit less active than usual but not too worrying. Has anybody got any idea? persephone Posted June 18, 2011 Share Posted June 18, 2011 Blood is always a bit of a worry .. if she is no better in the morning, i would suggest a vet visit - pups can go downhill fast ,with tummy bugs ... aussielover Posted June 18, 2011 Share Posted June 18, 2011 Fresh blood indicates a large intestinal problem; most likely colitis but it could be something more nasty. Mrs Rusty Bucket Posted June 18, 2011 Share Posted June 18, 2011 (edited) Have you tried feeling around her tummy area to see if she finds it painful or has hard or lumpy bits (ie vet now)? maybe she ate a sock? Though that never seems to slow my dog down any. Bones do. Bone splinters result in most of the problems you describe - but you can see (or feel) the spikey bit in the poo. So I'll keep an eye on her and if she has any more blood I will definitely go to the vet. I have not felt any lumps or distension that would indicate an internal bleed. As for eating the sock. I doubt it. She only has it hanging in her mouth to get our attention. She runs away when we see her and drops it pretty quickly once we ignore her. Its very cute but annoying. As aussielover mentioned it can indicate an intestinal problem. I have seen a puppy a few weeks younger than yours get very very sick very quickly with such a problem. Mindy had blood in her faeces on a few occaisons as a puppy- nothing more serious than colitis each time. One time she seemed quiet and in pain so we took her to the vet then but she recovered with some antibiotics and i/d only. I would take her if she seems quiet or stops eating. Give her a bland diet for the next few days. Hills i/d is good but if you don't have that you can give some boiled chicken and rice. Perhaps the new food didn't agree with her? Both really bad tho I'm not sure if that would result in blood. maybe she swallowed a baby tooth and that caused problems going though - like bone splinters can. Mine does get a lot of mucous if she's eaten something spikey. And also after eating mystery sea creatures at the beach. (nope not puffer fish or fish). Today she has been perfectly normal, beside the fact she refuses to eat her RC but will happily eat her rice, boiled chicken and some of her BH, though in small amounts.
