I located the synopsis of a study - this is aimed more at Danois than the OP - if you have an otherwise healthy dog or cat with a black coat that turns reddish brown it can be an indicator of a dietary lack of the amino acid Tyrosine.

It is a brief synopsis, but they found the evidence so overwhelming that after only 5 months they could all clearly pick by eye which of the littermate Newfies or black labs was on which diet, just by the coat colour. Amazing what a little old amino acid can do!

Thanks Raffikki, it is interesting as that amino acid i think it is - is found in cheese and dairy and our home prepared diet may have been lacking in dairy. I am feeding more cottage cheese now to see if it makes a difference

Of course they do, I'm simply putting my experience out there.

The are a million in one things that effect the coat, something as simple as not giving the ratio of Omega 6 & 9 is one of them.
