How Much Food For Puppy

 Share

Recommended Posts

Hi everyone,

This is my first post here though I have been lurking for quite a while.

We are bringing a 3 1/2 month old puppy into our home next week. She is currently being fed on Advance, so I will be continuing with that for a while and see how we go.

My question is, what other food should I be giving her and how much? Is she old enough to start on chicken wings/legs, or should I stick with necks for the moment? Would I give her just one a day or more?

What about all the dried things I see in the pet shops - pigs ears etc.? What are they for and how much do you give and how old does the pup have to be?

Are there any things I should make sure to avoid?

Any advice on puppy feeding would be much appreciated.

Thanks

Hi :) She is certainly old enough to tackle bones..but perhaps, to avoid tummy upsets , just keep to what the breeder's been using for teh first week or so .. housetraining a pup is hard enough, without possible diarrhoea everywhere ;)

Thanks. Yes, she is coming from a breeder. I was assuming the information from them would mostly cover what she was eating at the moment, but I am guessing a puppy's needs change as they grow so I just want to be prepared with ideas on what I can/should be adding to her diet over the next few months. :)

The breeder's diet sheet will cover what you need to do as the pup grows.

Honestly? You can't go too far wrong with feeding it however much it needs to keep in good condition, there is no magic number.***

If you want to continue to feed dry food then do so.

If you want to change brands, then do so (slowly!) once she has settled in to her new home, just make sure the new brand agrees with the dog.

If you want to add other things, then do so, remembering to change things slowly and only begin to change the diet once the pup is settled into your home.

Always remember nature designed then to eat meat AND bone so if your not feeding dry food do NOT feed them meat just on it's own

It's pretty hard to stuff up puppy feeding if you always remember it's not a human nor a herbivore ****

***EXCEPT for giant breeds which need very careful rearing and you need to be incredibly careful with these pups until they are 12-18 months old.
