EllasMum
Hello everyone, I need advice about dry dog food.Years ago we had a Newfoundland showdog and he had to have food that was so expensive, when we stopped showing him I had him on a cheaper dry complete dog food and he was fine admittedly he didnt have a great coat but he was strong and healthy.I had dogs all my life fed on any food plus left overs or tins of sardines and raw chicken now and again. We have another Newfy now,she is 18months old & desexed this one is just a pet not showdog but she is on a expensive top line food designed for sensitve skin as she suffered breakouts over the past summer, she was on a large breed puppy food till 2 months ago. Can anyone recommend a dry complete food that will still keep our girl healthy and give her what she needs? I see Purina Supercoat has a sensitive dryfood also a large breed food too in the range and its price is between the top of the line foods and the bottom cheap foods. My husky was the healthiest dog we ever owned and he only ever ate supercoat dry food.Somone mention Optimum dry food? is this better the supercoat or the same? JulesP
I tried every single dry dog food including the very expensive super premium foods. My youngest dog would either not eat them or would get a really bad rash. In desperation I tried Supercoat Sensitive and we have success. No rash and she will actually eat it. It doesn't work out to be super cheap though as it is not available in bigger bags. It is a good idea to do an elimination diet to work out what your dog is sensitive to. If it is a plant allergy a good with good oils might support the skin a bit.
OSoSwift
Optimum is a good supermarket food, it is one that has no Wheat in it - so good for dogs with wheat sensitivies. Black HAwk is a good dry food that is middle of the range and also has no wheat or soy
EllasMum
Hey guys thanks, yes I did an elimination of sorts on Ella, I found any meat, beef lamb etc or even raw chicken causes her to break out, basically she has the biscuits and tuna or sardines in water as treats. Also we mainly have grass and palms here but we did have tree ferns which she was sleeping under that I found cause allergy so they are cut down. Shes on supercoat for 2 days now and seems a bit unsettled in the tummy but I am sure it will pass soon. She loves the biscuits. Thanks
woodbyne
We feed our working dogs coprice working dog. Cheap no fancy colours in it like red and green kibble. dogs don't do massive poo after eating and its keeps weight on and shiny coats. My show/pet try hard obedience and agility dal eats a natural diet die to too many food alergies to list and grains and low calcium cause her to fit and our jack baby eats a combination of natural and puppy kibble, cans ets getting her used to as many things as we can so far no allergies. juice
I have to feed my dally a low purine diet, and i used to have a BT who had skin problems, i fed Optimum with great success, i used to feed Supercoat sensitive until they stopped selling the big bags.I am currently trying more expensive food, as i thought i wasn't doing the best for my dogs giving them optimum, but have to say they are not doing aswell on it(Artemis, runny poo's alot, and hungry all the time) so i am seriously thinking about going back to Optimum. OSoSwift
Optimum isn't bad, it also has no wheat - well the adult one anyway. I fed it for years and the dogs looked great. Now I feed Black Hawk Holistic
