Hi....I am very new to showing so this could be a bit confusing.I have a 13 month old Stafford who is been shown in junior class. He is at the top end of the standard in weight and height. He is state and Aussie bred so he could enter either of the three classes. Why place a dog in open, oz bred or state when he could be in junior or intermediate?

In breeds that are coated to put your dog up against similar age/length of coat. For staffords I imagine younger dogs may not be as physically mature i.e less musculature ect.

If your dog is large/mature for thier age they may be better off in open ect. Or you may be showing two.dogs the same age and trying to avoid clashes.

Some people do this when they have a few dogs around the same age, to separate them in classes and give them an extra chance of getting an 'in group' prize for their class.

Some people do it because of a belief that dogs further along the line get looked at more seriously.

Others do it because if their dog is quite young and looks big for it's age, it might fool a judge perhaps. But again, judges often ask for the age anyway, so they wouldn't be fooling anyone. ;)

This is something I'll have to do shortly with my sibling puppies coming out of baby puppy. My smaller one I will put in Minor and my slightly larger one I will put in Puppy class because I think she can hold her own in that class better than my boy could.

if you own several dogs they may be put in Open or Ausbred to spread them out. Must say I have never seen a state bred class yet. If I had two older dogs of a similar age I would seperate them into Open and Aus.

Hi,

I agree with everyone else it's mainly done to separate exhibits if you have dogs clashing in the same class........but in the case of Junior and Intermediate, these classes are not interchangeable.....Junior is for 9 months and under 18 months.........Intermediate is for 18 months and under 36 months

I moved my Schipperke bitch straight into Aus bred when she hit 18 months. I did this as there were 3 dogs already in intermediate that were constantly getting BIG or RUBIG and therefore intermediate was being knocked out. There is also an older full brother being shown in intermediate so wanted to give them both a chance if they were entered at the same shows. Another place I show there are also 2 Schipp bitches in the same class and whilst my girl wins 95% of the time I like to give th2 others a chance too but bottom line is she's good enough and competitive enough to be in that class.

Thank you for your advice.I only show one dog so it's not for spreading them around it's more a size issue.

I moved my Schipperke dog into Open when they changed the Grand Champion rules (1 BIS or 4 BIG/25 pt challenge).

If you have an international judging panel, look over the steward's shoulder at his/her clipboard when it comes time for BIS. Most of the group winners will come from Open.

When my dog achieved BIS (All Breeds), I put him back into Intermediate.

The bottom line is that it's all about pragmatism/tactics and your showing objectives.

I would suggest for Staffords keeping to age appropriate class UNLESS he looks physically more mature than others in his age group. If you think your dog is physically more developed than other juniors, look for Ausbred or Open. No matter what class you put him in, you're up for some stiff competition in this State!

State Bred isn't offered in every state, I know Tassie does. We split our dogs into different classes when we have dogs of the same age.

State bred is often offered in specialties in NSW but never in All breeds shows. I notice it gets offered a lot in Queensland though. We are only allowed 7 classes in AB shows in NSW, which are usually 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 10 & 11. I don't know if other states are different???
