Dog Repellers

I posted a thread a while ago about dogs unleashed running towards my dog when i take it walking and asked what is the best way to escape if it happens too quickly and the other dog attacks my dog.

I was wondering whether one of these dog repellers will help? and will it cause lasting damage to the dogs ears?

It is just a sound wave at a frequency above our hearing, once it is switched off it is just that.

It does no harm just distracts the dogs from what they are doing.

I have one and found it useful to distract the dogs when they were barking.

I don't think it would be much good as deterrent on an attacking dog.

Well, the one I have would not be.

Maybe they come in varying models.

I have the Dick Smith one.

Hi Giraffez, I bought a small horse dressage whip which I take walking with me - almost every unleashed aggressive dog in my area is small,so it is perfect for my situation. It is lightweight and I have attached it to the shoulder strap of my houndbag so I don't need to carry it. I do look a bit like a ninja with it though.

I have one of those...probably a better quality one & found it very handy when my dog was young to deter her from barking, chewing the walls, chasing cars, chooks, jumping up etc. It doesn't hurt their ears, just distracts them...I would say they probably find the sound irritating & uncomfortable. The one I have called the original "Dazer" is designed to repell dog attacks. I am sure if you pointed it at an attacking dog, your dog would also get the sound, which could confuse it a bit, but I have often thought of carrying it with me, in case I have to actually break up a fight. It is also good for repelling irritating mice & rats that get into the wall behind your bed at night  & I have used it to get an annoying rooster out of a tree near the house. It is supposed to only send the sound forward in an arc...but not sure about that.

but wouldn't it affect your dog as well? A dog in attack mode probably wouldn't notice it,either :(

I agree with this whole heartedly. A dog in a genuine attack mode, I believe would not take any notice of it.

I had one bought on ebay for barking and for a dog barking in a crate... Useless.

My father is an electrician... Said they can be good, but are VERY VERY directional. and do not have a long range.

Something to consider.
