I have been to German Shepherd Specialist shows and the odd person rocks up with a Jack-Russel or a Staffy or even a fluffy thing. My God did that get a lot of the GSD going. Still I dont think theres anything wrong with it as long as everyones dogs are vaccinated and under control. I'm sure that members of the public whose dogs or they are causing trouble could be asked to leave if need be.

[i believe it is a given that a Dog Lover would be the likely person to visit a Dog Show, and as such is it likely that they may have their pet with them. Of course they need to be held accountable for the behaviour of their pet. And for that matter any children they bring along!!

And what about husbands or partners? I took my husband (ex Husband now) to a dog show. A lady was grooming her Std Poodle. He laughed and said in a loud voice (much to my embarasment) "looks like a baboon". I explained to the lady it was his first show. She said "You should make it his last show" And it was

I have to go with the member of the ruling body. e.g. I take my muttleys (OT and AT) to Ch shows otherwise they would be home alone. They are both reg with Dogs NSW and therefore traceable and subject to the standards. Folks roaming around with something leaping at the end of a harness is a different story IMHO. I think showies need to be comfortable that the dogs around them are handled and vacinated etc to a standard.

Megan,

The public can bring their dogs to any dog show in Victoria except the Royal.

I've previously been advised the public can use KCC park as an off lead area anytime the gates are open. (Obviously this is not to interfere with events).

Interstate arrangements differ.

CC

Do you have this in writing or who advised you on this?

I don't see why I should have to share the grounds with non-members.

This just took a nose dive with the same old same old, small vs big dog debate. *yawn*

Why is it ok for one but not another? It's not so until things change it will always come up.

There's nothing worse than running the gauntlet of the "toy ring".

I once had a Griffon jump off the top of a four birth trolley to attempt to bite my Dane on the back of his hock as he was walking away.

Stupid owner tried to blame me for walking my big dog around the toy ring.

I think yes. Going to shows and bringing Akira along was how we ended up with Halo and showing ourselves. Now Akira comes along for a day out when Hales is showing and she loves the atmosphere. She spends most of her day in a crate but she just likes being there.

I'm in 2 minds as I have seen on some occassions the general public just letting their dogs appraoch other peoples dogs and that really doesn't make me feel comfortable.

To be fare, there are less than considerate people in all areas of the show ring. Trying to show a sensitive breed like an Afghan all the while someone left their terrier on a trolley top unattended right on the ring ropes of the hound ring is incredibly hard. Dog went off at anything that came near it's territory (the trolley) which meant the dogs actually being shown.

If I take my fluffy little toy breed into certain areas of the show, I expect reactions from the dogs. Yes the toy ring is known for its trolley loads of noisy dogs. Most are of the dogs are scared of big dogs and its fear based. Using reprimands actually exacerbates the fear and makes it worse. Not excusing those who do nothing, you need to work with the dogs or manage them so they don't interfere with others.

But back on topic, sometimes dogless public can be worse. One chap was riding his bike through the assembly areas at the ACT showgrounds. Idiots with mobile phones using the video camera to chat to a friend, walking into people's setups and shoving the phone right up to cages, nattering away.

I'd like to say *if* the public bring their own dogs and they show aggression then the owners details should be taken down and a letter written to their local council. No dog should get away with aggressive behaviour just because they are not owned by kennel control members.

OT but...

Being in the Toy ring is a pain in the butt when giant/large breeds walk passed...a trolley full of Pugs find it most

neccessary to bark at every big dog that goes by.

Giant/large breed dogs that are also being shown think nothing of the trolley full of abuse...

(snipped)

This used to irritate the hell out of me (owning/ showing a giant breed) - not being able to walk near the toy ring without dogs going off simply because he walked past. My giant actually did have an issue with the trolleys full of abuse but many toy owners seem to have no issue with their dog's behaviour. In my breed your dog gets roused on pretty damn quick if it barks at another.

I could not agree with you more!!!

Yep i agree with this also.

Then get out and SOCIALISE your dogs.

Cover their crates so they cant see any other dogs or people when they walk passed.

Myself, my dogs and other exhibitors and their dogs should not have to put up with dogs lunging at crate walls at us walking passed and carrying on barking, snarling etc.

You wouldnt accept it from a larger dog, a GSD or Rotti or Dobe so it is not ok from smaller dogs. (i dont care which would cause more damage if they connected) - it is not acceptable for the dog walking down the street to behave like that and it is not acceptable for show dogs either

VCA office staff, verbal.

I don't mind anyone walking their dog there. After all, the place is supposed to be about dogs isn't it? Such people are potential members.

By the way, there would be many Obedience and some Agility club members attending the grounds regularly who are not VCA members.

The person on whose behalf I asked attended as my guest so I could help him train his dog. He is local to KCC Park but I don't think he's ever gone there on his own.

Of more interest to me was seeing what seemed to be a Ford car club turn up at the BBQs one afternoon.

I've seen just as many big dogs be morons towards little dogs as the other way around. The shepherds don't want to go NEAR a trolley for fear of some nasty snappy thing screaching at them on the way past and it's often ignored..but if the shoe were on the other foot.....

I don't like to see Joe Public at shows with their dogs, mutt or not, because simply most have no idea how to control said dog/mutt and most aren't socialized correctly and incidents happen. Besides...many of the dogs/mutts I've seen at shows, are walked along and are filthy, ungroomed and probably flea infested and who knows what other yuckies lingering!! (including kennel cough which we as showies are always slammed for being the ones that are spreading it amongst ourselves when in fact, we often aren't!)

Can I ask: Does the aggressive dog rule apply to an unentered/Joe Public sort of dog/mutt?

If they trial, they will be. Furthermore, even non-trialling members will be members of VCA affiliated clubs.

The Canine Controls make plenty of money off agility. Triallers pay a levy PER RUN and for every title they apply for - and there are plenty.

Did you read my next line??

I was reacting to this sort of comment:

Rousing at a terrified dog doesn't stop if from being terrified, it makes it more terrified! :(

My little dogs have been lunged and accosted at by all kinds, big and small! I didn't get apologies either. There are crates holding large breeds where they fling themselves at crate walls to get at you and your dogs. You can stand pointing at the Toy ring and ignore the fact that there is ignorant and lazy owners elsewhere. I recall a poor stressed out Ridgeback at a royal who had a sheet draped over their cage but was still making unpleasant aggressive noises and "rocking" the cage. Dog really should not have been at the Royal and certainly not had it's cage in a walkway. I felt sorry for it and could see it was an accident waiting to happen.

Maybe I can make a diary of walking my well socialised small fluffy and the things he has to deal with, with dogs that are 10 times bigger than him.

Lots of people have beloved family pooches........non-pedigree mutts or whatever, who are clean, well groomed, vaccinated, flea-free and beautifully behaved. Some are even obedience trained to a high standard. Amazing, that.

Who'd have thought that a dog without a pedigree could be such a thing?

Sorry that was not directed specifically at you, it was a general comment to anyone that has dogs like that.

I was commenting directly to the fear based line.

I should have edited it better

If a dog is that terrified of other dogs at dog shows, unless you can do something to ease that fear, leave them at home
