eoh Posted May 30, 2011 Share Posted May 30, 2011 Hi, I have a 10 yr old Bull Mastiff and 7 year old Great Dane Cross. The bull mastiff has itching and hair loss around his face, and legs. Now my great dane has started scratching and has bite marks all over her belly and legs, and because she is white, her skin is now pink and red. The bull mastiff has had a skin scrapping (2 now and still negative), on yeast tablets, prednisone, and antibiotics, as his face is now infected. I have washed them in Demadex, we are now scratching as well. Have washed all dog beds several times, and our clothing as well. The bull mastiff is a bit better, but great dane is still scratching. I have read about using tea tree, borax, apple cider vinegar, oatmeal wash, hydrogen peroxide and now very confused at what i shall do next. This has been going on now for several weeks. Sandra777 Posted May 30, 2011 Share Posted May 30, 2011 Mange is caused by mites. Why is the dog on yeast tablets? Increasing the amount of yeast in a system usually only makes skin issues worse. The fact that it started on the face and legs suggests it is likely mange but unfortunately skin scrappings don't always help. It could be sarcoptic mange - do they have contact with foxes or places foxes could be? This is a common source of sarcoptic mange. Have they ever had anything like this before? Mange IS mites ... there are two sorts - and a vet who knows his/her stuff would be your best option now. using home remedies when you have no idea what the problem is could make things worse Ask about allergies as well... allergies can be to grains/proteins in food- plants in the garden, cleaners - anything, basically. Hi, the vet said he has a yeast infection so on anti-yeast tablets. no foxes here, we did have a lot of birds though, as next door to a park. They have both had surgery this year at the vets, so maybe their immune system is low, but i just dont know whether to use the natural products now or rebath them in the demadex again. eoh Posted May 30, 2011 Author Share Posted May 30, 2011 Thanks for that, i have also read you can use a anti dandroff treatment on them as it contains ingredients good for their coat. The vet also gave me a plastic collar for the bull mastiff to wear which i haven't had on him overnight as he has only got one good eye, so i will have to leave it on him for 24 hours a day for the next few days to see if it improves, as he keeps scratching his head and reopening his skin Link to comment Share on other sites More sharing options...

My now 3 1/2 yo had Demodex mites at 4 months old which was easily picked up in skin scraping but demodex is not contagious so it shouldn't be that if one has passed it on to the other. I 2nd the vote on getting a second opinion for a different vet and take both dogs. It definitely sounds like mites and sarcoptic mites can get very very bad (think those dogs you see all scabby on Animal Rescue programs) so try for another vet and more skin scrapings the sooner you get a definite answer the sooner you can start treating properly. Dogs should be quarantined (as it is HIGHLY contagious) and washed once a week in Malaseb. Ivomectin given orally can be used (warning this is off label medication and must be prescribed by the vet. Ivomectin should not be used at all on certain breeds that have an intolerance to 'mectin' products. Your vet should know what breeds they are. You can also use revolution spot on fortnightly as it treats the mange mites. It takes around 8 weeks for sarcoptic mange to respond to treatment to the point the dogs are no longer scratching at all and during that time the dogs should not be taken for walks or taken anywhere other than for vet visits. If possible vet visits should be done either at your house in in you car as a carpark consult so you are not letting them shed mites around places other dogs will visit. Doesn't sound like Mange, I think you need to take both the dogs back to the Vets. Loads of Harles and Danes in general don't cope well with Oatmeal shampoos and if the dog has a Yeast problem then Oatmeal will only feed the problem.
