Anyone Know Approx Mri Cost?

Hi everyone I tried searching but the search function hates me :rolleyes:

My friend has a dog who's been a bit wobbly in his back end and generally unwell. The vet is guessing a brain tumor or a brain bleed, possible stroke. She has been given some meds for him and has been told that if he doesn't improve they'll be looking at an MRI to see what's going on. Has anyone had one done before? Just looking for a ballpark figure so it's not too much of a shock if it's needed, the dog will probably be referred to Brisbane if that helps.

Depends on how many scans (from different angles) are required.

I was potentially needing a dog scanned 2 years ago. I think one scan cost $1500? The second was cheaper -maybe 700?

I had a dog scanned about 18 months ago at Queensland Veterinary Specialists, it was $1,500 or so if I remember correctly.

We had one done in January in Sydney, was approximately $1,200.

Has she just gone to her normal vets? I would definitely head to a specialist for a second opinion and then they can go towards MRI etc. from the specialists.

Yeah just the normal vets at this stage, I'd say she'll head to the specialist if the meds don't have an effect.

Correct just had a quote for $1500. With more areas comes additional costs.

"A bit wobbly in the back end" - get your friend to look into alternative treatments that are cheaper and may just eliminate the problem and prove there is no further need for investigative testing. I know a number of people who got worst case scenario verdicts from vets and were told MRI's were required but they couldnt afford them straight away so went to a mobile animal chiropractor I use and the results have been amazing, the vet has then said there is no need to proceed down the path they were going to. I hope your friend is coping ok.

Thanks rottifan I didn't go into it too much in the OP but there are other symptoms as well which suggest a neurological problem, circling and disorientation etc. He's a small breed old dog so unlikely to have injured himself in the back end but she will probably get a few different opinions before taking the plunge anyway.

Yeah definitely worth seeing about a chiro visit anyway - if the dog has a pinched nerve in the base of the skull from hitting his/her head I've seen that cause symptoms similar, disorientation, standing facing into a corner and doing strange things. Dogs that have been put on medication for alheizers have had miraculous recoveries with an adjustment. All dogs generally have pinched nerves, they can live with the pain and adjust the way they walk until something triggers off the pain and it all becomes too much, definitely wouldnt hurt hey

Hello my GSD Kim is like that,it was thought a brain tumor then a spinal tumor and after fluid being taken from her brain and thousands of dollars we are none the wiser, she also takes fit like things and drags her toes on various occasions on different feet and you can always tell because of the different lengths of nail on each foot.She is on medication for pain, So if your friend finds out please let me know.

I looked into a MRI but because I live in outback QLD it was going to cost a fortune to get there and I think I had to fly to Melbourne (this was a couple of years ago) and we decided that because of her age we would not put her through it and go day by day she is now heading to her 10th birthday and still here doing the same thing but on heavier drugs.

I sometimes wonder if it is an afflication that has built up from over the years when she was toad poisoned numerous times in her younger day. But there is no test for that so here we are still going day by day.

Good news the old boy is starting to bounce back and behave like his old self again He's still on meds which I gather is a steriod of some sort so wont know for sure if he's in the clear until he comes off those but improvement is always a good sign

We had an MRI on our staffy about 2yrs ago and $1500 is about right.This was after chiro gave no improvement and condition worsened.It turned out to be a spinal tumour,which our vet advised could be the case initally.When I think back there were strange signs beforehand eg she seemed to be off her food but ate it when put up to her mouth,I think she had lost her sense of smell at that stage.

The telling sign in the end was her "third eye lid"?? not retracting in one eye and pupils uneven,this was when the MRI was used and showed the tumour which was progressively disabling her.

If this dog has responded to medication its a good sign so things are looking better for him,hope all goes well,
