Toilet Training Help

Hello,

Ive got a 1 year old desexed male golden that Ive come to realise is not toilet trained properly, just suddenly clicked today :(

He has always been kept in our bathroom at night with a baby gate on the door. He is REALLY good at not doing anything in there and has occasionally gone 10 hours without weeing when I have slept through an alarm. If he does need to go generally he will do some barking or just go over the drain, this I have no problem with.

As a puppy he would go to the toilet on the carpet in our hallway rather then advising us (clearly wasn't picking up on this queues either). There has been a few times that we have allowed him to have the run of the hallway and bathroom at night as we believed that he was old enough and showing the ability to hold on, EVERY TIME he has had this allowance he has gone for a wee one the carpet. Just tonight he was unable to get out his dog door as it was shut and has just walked down the hallway and done a wee on the carpet :'( there was no sign he needed the toilet, he did not come up to me either. I need HELP!

I havent had the carpets cleaned professionally and I'm now thinking I should start there to try and get rid of some of the smell maybe? Im also thinking he wont go on the tiles in the bathroom as he considers that his room? I have the problem that even if he DESPERATELY needs the toilet he will not go outside whilst you are anywhere near the door as he fears getting locked outside. This means I can literally stand outside for an hour waiting for him to join me and wee.

I know I need to go back to basics with him but dont really know what the basics are with a dog thats already established a routine in the house. Help?

I'm only throwing out ideas hopefully someone more experience will come in. Have him tied up to you so he can't just wonder away and pee on the carpet, Take him out every hour and when he does do his buisness outside make a huge fuss over him saying good boy,It ia also a good idea to use go toilet, Make sure you say it while he is doing his buisness, He will then relise what go toilet means. Go back to training him like he was a puppy just brought home. Do not let him out of your sight either keep him crated when you can't watch him or tie him to you. I would also throughly clean where he has peed,Make sure you use a product that doesn't have ammonia in it as this will just cause the dog to keep peeing there.

Clean the Carpets.

The pretend the dog is a puppy and toilet train in the same manner. Take the dog down to the yard every 1-2 hours (when you're awake and home) give a toileting cue and when the dog starts to go calmly give praise using the command i.e. "Goooood Toilet". When the dog has finished lay on the praise and have a play.

If the dog does not toilet within 5 minutes go back inside and watch the dog and do not allow the dog access to parts of the house where you can't see.
