Kongs

I know this has been mentioned before, but after my experience I thought It's worth another mention. I've been a faithful kong user with my dogs for many years, but a couple of weeks ago It all changed when It got stuck In one of my girls mouth and she couldn't get It out and neither could I :(

I've always used the extra large blk ones and just became to complacent I guess. She had chewed that top section off which then made It a little smaller and It had never been a problem before but Instead of grabbing onto It sideways she grabbed It lengthwise and that's when It got stuck between top and bottom fangs, I just couldn't pull It out and It was starting to distress her, Immediately the horror was running through my mind that she was a gonna and that I really needed to haul her over to the vets, I don't know how I did It but after what seemed like an eternity I did manage to unwedge It, she was fine but my fingers weren't too good for a while but who cares It was out. It immediately went to the bin and It still gives me shivers thinking about It, but I'll never use one again, much to her horror as she loves her kong, but I ain't going through that again ever!

Here she Is now content with a tatty ball, and I think she's forgotten about her beloved Kong :)

I had the exact same thing happen to me a few weeks ago, certainly gave me a fright!! I had bought my 5mth old the puppy kong as she is still quite small and it really did seem the most appropriate size. Luckily I was sitting outside with her when she started gagging. Managed to get it our with my help, and it is now in the bin!!

Glad your gorgeous girl is okay!

I have heard of a Shepherd that got one stuck length ways down his throat he managed to get enough hair because of the small hole. He needed a very quick gas GA and a pair of pliers attached to the ball to get it out, he was very lucky. Have also seen a Lab bit a blockage sized piece out of the black extra large Kongs. I am a bit wary of them as well.

I have also seen a skinned tennis ball lodged down a GSD throat, how it hadn't blocked his air off I'll never know, he got stressed at the vet and struggled, the ball went down cut his air off and very quick action on the vets behalf got it out so he could get air and he also survived.

I worry about tennis balls as well with any sized dog.

Oh by the way your girl is just gorgeous :D

Thanks guys, It was pretty scary and I remember reading about a few dogs having problems with them so I was weary but the size of It I guess put me In a sense of false security that It wouldn't happen. OsoSwift that's freaky getting lodged down his throat :( ....the ball she's using atm Is a solid rubber one, hasn't lasted very long at all, so am on the hunt for a more robust one  So any more suggestions would be most welcome

It was very weird, the guy walked in the front and went oh can I see a vet my dog just swallowed a ball. The dogs was trying to swallow a bit. and I went what down his throat, He said yep, it's down his throat and I can't see it. I admit I froze for a second, went oh crap and bolted to get a vet and rushed the dog out the back. He got put on the exam table and then got a bit stressed and the ball went down and it was all hands on deck!!!

Have only seen it once and I hope I never see it again!!!

Hmm not sure on the ball front as mine are not power chewers, but will keep my ear out :)

Isn't there a DOLer who had their GSD die on the way to the vet with a ball stuck in his throat? Can't remember if it was a Kong or a tennis ball though.

I once saw a dog with over 1/2 of his tongue missing. He had his favourite ball at home in the backyard for months. One that had a hole in the middle (like a Kong, but was a different brand), and somehow he managed to get his tongue stuck in the hole.

It must have been there for sometime when the owners got home from work and found him, as the circulation to the tongue was cut off and it was already black in colour. So there was no other choice but to amputate the dead part. :( He recovered very well though, and the owners are just thankfull he lived.

Have you tried the orbee tough balls with rope attached? Not sure if they would be strong enough but they work for my two :)

Not along ago I read about a young dog who died from having a ball lodged down his throat, he was only a young boy It just broke my heart seeing his pic  It happened so quickly and vets could do nothing to save him

Haven't tried the orbee balls will look It up, like the Idea of It being on a string too, no more slobbery hands! Thanks

The staffy ball? I think It Is, looks like It'll be pretty tough and longer lasting but It's too big and I know she'd lose Interest real quick, was told there Is a smaller version but I can't seem to find It
