Ruftybear
Could I please ask some advice? I have a little 11 year old mini foxie who has had the worst allergy and sneezing this year. She developed a lump like swelling on her nose, so we took her to the vet and she is currently on antibotics. This doesn't seem to have helped with the lump very much, and I'm wondering whether to try another antihistamine? She is still sneezing (not as badly as she was though), and we did try Polaramine which didn't really help much. Does anyone have a suggestion that would be better for me to try with her as we have another week of the antibiotics before we go back to the vet? It is making it worse for her as she is blind (glaucoma and has been blind since she was 3 years old) and she is losing direction and bumping into things more than normal. It's breaking my heart seeing her like this and I am in tears at the moment feeling like we will have to put her to sleep if we can't resolve this for her. She is healthy in every other respect, but because she is blind she relies more heavily on her hearing and sense of smell which aren't working for her at the moment. Can someone please help me? oakway
So sorry to hear of your little dogs predicament. I would suggest to try another vet and see what they have to say.
Ruftybear
So sorry to hear of your little dogs predicament. I would suggest to try another vet and see what they have to say. Thanks oakway, that's what we are going to do next week. I do think she needs antihistamine again because she seems to have all the symptoms and is otherwise in perfect health. Maybe the Polaramine wasn't the right one for her?

Ruftybear
Yip dogs all respond to different antihistamines polaramine did nothing for mine Thanks for taking the time to answer me. I'll keep trying until I find one that works for her. She's perfectly well in every other respect, so hopefully when we get on top of this, she will be OK. However sneezing is often a sign of an inhaled grass seed that has lodged somewhere in the nasal cavity. It may be a good idea to ask your vet if they can check her for this. oakway
Actually I am far more concerned about the lump on the nose. The lump MAY just be the cause of the sneezing and should be looked at as soon as possible.
Ruftybear
Thanks. She's an indoor dog, so I don't think it would be any grass seeds (unless it's come in on our shoes). She also has other symptoms such as chewing her feet, her ears are quite red at times as well as around her chin and she is a bit itchy around her tummy area. The vet seemed to feel like it was allergy, but I will be going back next week when her antibiotics are finished. She's always been a bit of an allergic dog, but this year seems to have been particularly bad for her. Edited May 23, 2011 by Ruftybear
Ruftybear
I just wanted to say thank you to those who offered advice to me. Lucy crossed the rainbow bridge this afternoon. We made the decision to put her to sleep when the new vet (I did get a second opinion, as suggested) confirmed a tumor. Thankfully she was in no pain and is now probably running around with Charlie and Sasha happy and free. I am going to miss her so much, but I know we did the right thing for her. Thank you all again.
