toy dog
if they get this dog i can see it in a shelter in a few months already , ive met a few mals that are pretty boisterous plus imagine how much it would cost to feed one. Will they even make the effort to take it to training if so thats money again plus vet bills etc. They have enough to pay already such a stupid decision and who would pay $700 for a x bred poor puppy. gosh and we wonder why we have so many dogs in the pound eh. a no brainer there as to why there is a population explosion of dogs across the country. budgiew
Sometimes you just have to tell people straight whats what for there own good;and in this case the welfare of the dog and the kids. These people are not mature so sit down with them and tell them that you are concerned about them as they are your friends; and then tell them honestly and calmly what you think. Yes they may not like it;but it may shock some sense into them.If they are true friends they will listen and value what you say. This approach worked for me with my brother when i had some long time issues with him. good luck.

kelpiekaye
Time for some tough love. Tell your friend to tell them if that puppy so much as sets foot in the house, she'll be taking them to the small claims court to get the money the owe her. (Which she should be hinting at anyway) Pussy footing about with morons only leaves you with sore feet. The key issue here is financial. No need to make up a bunch of scary stories about dogs. I'd not be wanting to share a house with this mob.. no way. Edited for sense. X
Dxenion
........but that is definitely going to be dominant (as both sheperds and malamutes are) and may or may not be independent. Both breeds require a decent amount of training and socialisation - as they are both inclined towards aggression and distrust of strangers. Shepherds can be very dangerous in the wrong hands, and will often happily assume 'top dog' if no-one else does. Both breeds are prone to similar problems in that as large breeds, they should have their hips and elbows tested etc - so there won't be any hybrid vigour. We have a White Swiss Shepherd import. The Swiss Shepherd and the German Shepherd have different traits, however just to confuse issues, there are also white German Shepherds which have the same temperament traits as coloured ones. This is an excerpt from the ANKC (and international) breed standard description about temperament for the WSSD: Temperament: Lively, without nervousness, attentive and watchful; towards strangers slightly aloof but never apprehensive or aggressive. This is an excerpt from the ANKC (and international) breed standard description about temperament for the German Shepherd: Temperament: The German Shepherd Dog must be of well balanced temperament, steady of nerves, self assured, totally at ease (except when provoked) and good natured as well as attentive and easy to train. He must possess instinctive drive, resilience and self confidence in order to be suitable as a companion, watch dog, protection, service and herding dog. Not all German Shepherds are inclinded towards aggression. Behaviour traits can be influenced by many factors (eg genetics, environment, medical issues and training). Whilst German Shepherds are excellent police, armed forces and security dogs, they also make brilliant search and rescue, guide and assistance dogs. It depends on the natural inclination of the individual dog, not the whole breed. For the WSSD, another significant health factor to test for is a DNA test to check if they are a carrier for or affected by MDR1.

Remarkabull
Thanks for the replies everyone. I saw my friend at work today and she is pretty annoyed about the whole thing. We are hoping at this stage that they can't come up with the money for this pup and maybe realise that it is a bad idea ATM. The lease on the house is for 6 months and the house is also for sale so I don't know what they'd plan on doing if they had to leave there. They already have 4 cats (none desexed) that are allowed to run free whenever they please. My friend has asked if she can have one of the cats (6 month old male) who is very friendly and has taken a shine to her 14 year old son. She is going to get him desexed, chipped etc next week. I would love to say something to these people about a lot of things (including their terrible parenting skills) but I also don't want to make things too hard for my friend. She has been friends with this guy for a few years and he has helped her out when her marriage fell apart so she feels like she can't be too hard on him even though she is furious over the money thing. I feel sick about this, I am going out there tomorrow night and will try to casually talk about how much hard work dogs are and also how expensive they can be. I think his decision may actually be because when I go out there I take Acheron with me and they see how well behaved he is and think that all dogs are like this. They have no idea about how much work and effort I put into him. I so bloody angry at them for this.
Staranais
I have just had a look again on FB and apparently the pup is 'Red Alaskan Malamute x Pure bred White Swiss Shepherd'. The pup is a female and is costing them $700. If the parents haven't been hip scored & elbow scored, and I'm betting they haven't, they shouldn't touch the pup with a barge pole. It could end up costing them a lot of money that they don't have.
JoeK
Experienced breeders have difficult time predicting how pups turning out on bloodlines they knowing well, cross breedings is impossible to predicting what trait will come to the table. I maybe take a cross breed pup if I like him a lot, but never would I pay money for cross breeding, they are worthless animal from money perspective for my opinion. budgiew
Do they realize that puppies whimper at night and poo everywhere. They have a newborn baby who will already do that. These people are under stress ;2 kids ;4 cats ;needing to move again as the house is sold. When people are under stress they sometimes do crazy things ,like buy a pup,to try to feel better or focus on something other than their problems.Perhaps they need professional counseling. Gillby
I would have thought it's quite simple. 1: permission needs to be given from the landlord. 2: man up and ask for your money back. The issue isn't how to persuade them not to. It's to be frank and say. I want my money NOW and the dog isn't allowed on the property. End of... LOL he's the most STUBBORN dog I have met in my entire life. He's ridiculously intelligent, but if there's nothing in it for him... wellll.... plus, he doesn't listen to anyone he's not close to - so take him with you and when u try to tell him something he'd just be like 'yeah eff off' LOL - that'll show how much work a dog can be!!!!!! They have no idea about how much work and effort I put into him. I so bloody angry at them for this. Ask them how much time they are willing to put into working this dog. I had Mallies for 15 years and know just how much needs to be invested into a dog of this breed. I realise the pup is a cross, but it's still going to have to be trained properly and cannot be left in the backyard for the rest of it's life only getting attention at feed time. As for the four cats, tell them that if they really love and adore them, don't bring this sort of dog into the home because they won't last long. I could count on one hand the number of Mallies that get along with cats and that's only because the owners manage it very well. As sad as it sounds, it would appear that this family doesn't manage anything too well. Good luck trying to persuade them. I wouldn't be able to bite my tongue if I were you. Red Fox
So the house is a rental and also for sale? Whose name is on the lease? Has the housemate actually TOLD these people she does not agree? Does the landlord approve? Seems pretty clear cut to me. You can't have a puppy in a rental property (particularly one that is for sale) unless all parties approve. Communication would be a start.... SpotTheDog
If they have four undesexed cats, could you get the ranger onto them? I'd see if I could get a ranger to call out to the house regarding the cats - give them a heads up that these people are in the market for a puppy too and you think it's a disaster waiting to happen. It might impact them if the ranger appeared and fined them for having the cats unregistered and then brought up the subject of a dog and what a dreadful idea that would be...
