redangel Posted May 11, 2011 Share Posted May 11, 2011 (edited) I have been given a small sum of money which brings bad memories to me (estate) but my friend says I should turn it into something positive: something that gives me pleasure. Naturally a lens might be just that. I currently have 18-55 (5.6) 70-200 (3.5-5.6) and my favorite 50mm 1.4. Using for people,dog watching, places, hiking (birds and stuff) what should I look towards. I use my 50 +++ times as I love the clarity. I have a dedicated macro also. Would love a genuine nikon lens (assuming they are better). I havent anything in the 24-70mm, nor longer than 200mm. Any ideas???? Not sure what your budget will be or what you typcially shoot and I'm not sure on Nikon prices for lenses, but I would go 24-70 2.8.. I LOVE this lens (in Canon) and I think it has been an investment for my images. If you are thinking that you want something longer than the 200mm - I would look at your current images and see how often you use the 200mm and think that you could use the extra length before buying something longer than a 200mm. I bought a Nikkor 24mm 2.8 about a month ago cos I wanted something a bit wider. I like it, but find it's not quite as sharp as the 50 though. Really Gila? I find my 24mm sharper than my 50mm. I have seen reviews online for the 24-70 seems a great landscape/streetscape lens ( correct me if Im wrong) I use my 50mm 1.4 80% of the time, my macro 105mm 2.8 20% of the time...would use my 70-200 kit lens more (was good for events) but the images are too soft for me focus wise these days. edit to add: I think Ive got it down to 2 lenses: my fav at the moment the nikkor12-24 Edited May 13, 2011 by redangel Link to comment Share on other sites More sharing options...
Ripley Posted May 14, 2011 Share Posted May 14, 2011 (edited) I shoot wild birds mainly (with a lens that is) and find my 300mm long enough - I've got the Canon 300mm prime. If the bird is particularly skittish, I will attach a 1.4 teleconverter but then it makes the lens heavy and slows down the AF and I hate using a monopod. It's the lens I use the most. I bought a neoprane camo cover for it so it doesn't stick out like a hand of sore fingers, being a white lens. It makes my lens look like a tree branch when it's on Today I'm editing some photos from last year I took with this lens and I can't believe how sharp it is using it hand held - but it's a prime so I shouldn't be surprised. I've taken photos using it hand held from a rolling boat in a swell and they are still sharp - I love it. I'm sure the Nikon equivalent, if there is one, would be the same if not better. Good luck with your decision - have you considered a Sigma lens? Their telephotos get good reviews and they are probably a lot less expensive than a Nikon. I considered a Sigma lens, I think it was the 120-400 with OS but decided on a Canon and don't regret the extra I paid for it as I use it the most. eta: Decide what you like taking photos of the most. For me, it's only nature photography so I needed a telephoto and a wide angle. I have a Sigma 10-20mm but admit I rarely use it.
