Tonsilitis In Dogs

 Share

Recommended Posts

Alfie has been a bit off colour this week, pretty none specific although he had eaten some grass and been sick once. The following day he ate and he was still playing and wrestling with Issy so we thought he was fine. On Friday he ate nothing and was a bit "mopey", I took him into the vet on Saturday morning as he is normally a good eater. He has tonsillitis! In all the years we have had dogs I have never come across this,he has had a pain killing and anti-inflammatory injection and is on antibiotics, half an hour after the jab he was looking for food so must have been in some pain. My question is if anyone else's dog has had this did it just happen the once or as with humans did it keep coming back? He has eaten some soft prescription diet this morning and is clearly on the mend but I am concerned about the antibiotics if it is recurring, as they tend to upset his stomach? Any advice/experiences welcomed.

It is reasonably common in racing greyhounds - could be due to overstressed systems in their case. Removal is usually preferable (for the greys) as it tends to keep occuring.

A few years ago my cats (3) got cat flu including tonsilitis. One of them was in a bad way with his throat swelling so much he was choking. No vet was available til Monday so I resorted to a home remedy I have use with my kids when they also have a sore throat.

I mix equal parts of apple cider vinegar and honey in a jar (warm it a little to help it mix). I give my kids a spoonfull of this every couple of hours and within 24hrs - no sore throat....

So the amounts for animals needs to be reduced - I diluted the tablespoon of "witches Brew", as my kids call it, with 1/2 cup cooled boiled water and suringed it into the cat's mouth. I continued this every 1/2 hour for the first 12hrs then every 4 hrs. When I finally got him to the vet I was told that this mixture probably save it's life. The honey soothes the inflamed membrains and the vinegar is a natural antiseptic.

Your dog is going to object to the taste, but pursivere, even if you have to put it in a head lock ...lol

Yes it can re-occur but often it isnt noticable. It can show up in both dogs and cats.

Good luck

P.S. As for the upset tummy - give him spoonfull of natural yoghurt, it helps to re-align the gut flora

Blessings

Hi Coogie!

I was just as shocked as you when my Juno was diagnosed with tonsilitis when she was still a little pup! I had absolutely no idea they could get it either but as my vet said they have tonsils therefore they get it!

She has only had it the once, I think she was about 4-5months old?

I took her to the vet because she had woken me up two nights in a row making little gagging noises. I thought it sounded like she was trying to bring something up. When the vet had a look she had a red swollen throat so the gaging was just her trying to clear her throat. SHe was on antibiotics for a week-10days which cleared it up and she hasn't had any more problems.

Good luck, I hope poor Alfie is feeling better soon :kissbetter:

Thanks for the replies -

I will definitely try the "witches" brew Kerry, he already gets yoghurt for breaky sometimes so I could give him a bit extra. I also got some probiotics off a friend last time and they helped. I guess we will just have to wait and see if it comes back,it sounds like it is much worse in cats, glad they are all ok. Hopefully it won't come back, and I have to add he is like a different dog this afternoon,he is eating the soft food, taking his tablets and being a little bit spoilt with the odd cheese slice.

Gretel had it several times and she didn't respond to antibiotics the last bout so her tonsils were removed and she was fine afterwards. She got very sick the first time she had it. :(

Wow! Who knew cats and dogs could get tonsillitis???? I will have to remember your "witches brew" the next time I get a bout of tonsillitis. Happens at least once a year, and they won't take my tonsills out :(

Thanks for that Rottifan and to everyone else for all the advice and replies, sorry to hear that Gretel glad she is fine now - the bad news is our girl Issy has now got it as well - so another trip to the vet this morning, hopefully we have caught hers sooner. It is much easier to tell if she is a bit off as she is usually the energiser bunny type and she would not get up this morning.

The good(ish) news is that since she caught it from Alfie the vet believes it is most likely a bug and apparently therefore less likely to be recurring. They are now both confined to barracks for a few days as it is clearly infectious. They are currently having a terrible time lying on the sofas under their blankies.

OH has just said his throat feels a bit sore  Please, please, please not Man Flu as well.

My rotti Boy had his tonsils out after many goes at antibiotics, you wouldn't even know he had them out and he was

eating the same night. I think like humans now they prefer to leave them in and treat with antibiotics but if the problem persist they take them out.

He never went off his food or acted very sick at the time but he had a whitish phlem down his throat and would seem like his throat had closed a little sometimes causing him gag but not always

I hadn't had a dog with this problem before and when they told me I felt like I had a 5 Year old child, taking him to hospital to get his tonsils out. My vet said they get a few shelties that get them removed.

Hope your boy feels better

Cheers Lee
