Puppy School Brisbane

I'm planning to take my rott pup to puppy school asap.

At what age should i take it?

His nearly 9 weeks of age, already had his vaccination and due for second one on the 30th.

I plan to take it to Teamwork Obedience at Carseldine, they use a open field on campus, is that location ?

I would say get in as soon as possible. They should be running puppy schools in a location that is safe for puppies that are not fully vacc'd if it is a good puppy school. But I'd definitely want to be starting puppy classes before 12 weeks old.

Start training now and continue for at least 12 months.

I'd want to go to a puppy pre-school (a decent one) in a sterile area until the pup was fully vaccinated and then onto an obedience/training school.

there are alot of dog clubs who have puppy school but only allow pups who had there 2nd shot which is 12weeks+ age. Better attend one who accepts below that age yeah?

mmm careful! Its a fine line between socialization and Parvo. Puppies are not adequately covered until after their 12 week vac and in some cases even longer. Parvo is around and it is a killer!!! Check with the local vet regarding the prevalence of Parvo in that area before exposing your puppy.

You can do a lot of stuff safely by taking him out and about in your arms to meet people, go to shopping centres so he can see the hustle and bustle of life and allow him to meet safe dogs who you know are vaccinated. You can and should do lots of puppy training now. You don't need a dog club to do this at home and other safe places. I'm not against puppy classes but I would investigate and research well first.

We went to Teamwork at Carseldine last year:) They are pretty good, but don't allow clickers in class for some reason. I also found that they focus more on obedience stuff than socialisation, and because the area isn't fenced in the puppies don't really get to socialise much. At the start of the class there is off leash socialisation, but if your dog needs a few minutes to get into a playing mood, it misses out. (Which was the case with my puppy)

But don't get me wrong, I liked the classes there and the instructors are friendly and good.

We also did puppy classes at PADS ( http://www.pads.org.au/ ) which I thought were better. They encourage the use of clickers, the instructors are friendly and very good, and the whole area is fenced in and only accessible to members of the club, so it's safer from a disease point of view. Being fenced in this also means that most of the classes are done off leash, so you get to work on off leash control, and inbetween exercises the puppies can run around and play.
