julzjc Posted May 7, 2011 Author Share Posted May 7, 2011 The only concern I'd have with fostering is what if he starts to eat, then the foster goes, and he gets depressed all over again? That was my other corcern. Dont want to put him through the loss again. Would have to look for a more pernament dog urgently if it did work or get a pernament dog in the first place. I don't mean to worry you, but black poos in humans can mean a gastric or oesophageal lesion that's bleeding, and that may not show up on blood tests if its a more chronic blood loss ( i don't know about dogs but humans would need scopes to have a look). it could also explain his weight loss or lack of appetite. Had him at the inlaws on good Friday, left him with a steak and went inside where he couldnt see me/ wouldnt have known that I hadnt actually left. Only time Ive tried it. Didnt eat the steak, just got major anxiety trying to break into the house/escape the yard. Ended up having to take him into my inlaws "strictly no dogs inside" house to calm him down (tried to lauch himself through a closed window), it was his first time at someone elses house without Bonnie. Only way I would try it again would be if the person had a secure run. Dont trust him not trying to escape if I left him at someone elses house. Wary about stressing him out anymore. Whatever you offer him make it a small amount only each time (like a tablespoon on one your own plates) he won't feel pressured by large amounts this way. Have you tried Manuka honey - not enough nutrition on its own obviously but it might get him to eat if you smear it on whatever you are trying to tempt him with. That can be indicative of a narrowing of the large intestine or rectum (for whatever reason that might be). I know when I was searching to try to narrow down the source/reason for my own boy's problems, that I've read of the things you're mentioning and that it included stools becoming a shape like thin ribbon (is that what it is like?) but I can't track back to the very thing it was indicative of. It just seems odd - that he's playing etc .. but finds the thought of eating repugnant . The only other dogs I've seen grieving have not wanted to interact with anyone ... I know from your post about Bonnie and the photos you shared with us how close they were. I hope nothing is medically wrong and I hope her spirits lift soon. Maybe try a behviourist? Open up his mouth and stick it way over the back of his tounge??? Not the worlds best solution but at least he will get calories into him. Or just normal? small thin stools would i suspect be normal for a dog who is not eating much but here goes: i am also assuming that Indies teeth and gums have been thoroughly checked. and that full blood panel ( including thyroid etc ) have been done( early addisons can have very vague symptoms...)( yeh i know i am taking the discussion to the dark side ) One of the maremma girlies here- Her Royal Highness, The Princess Angel ( and you should bow or curtsey in her royal presence ) had similar symptoms.. and vet thought a blockage in her bowel.. it was actually a tumour in her pelvic canal.. that being said she strained to poop, did thin long poops, but the full bowel could be felt. she also would not eat or only a few tiny mouthfulls at a time, would be friendly with us and Hairy Beary, come up for meals, but snif and walk away from food Since initial dx she has had several trips to vet for enemas.. mainly after eating something long dead that has blocked things upagain. she gets parafin oil, and metamucil or similar in several small meals a day. Vit B inj can help stimulate appetite as can nutrigel rubbed on the gums. Is Indie getting anything to prevent hypoglycemia? ie glucose or maple syrup or lectade maybe consult with a holistic vet as well... They wanted to wait and do barium this Friday if he is still not eating, but if he gets more lethargic they want to take him in straight away to do it. I was going to call them first thing tomorrow morning and ask them to take him in sooner as he hadnt eaten anything (excluding a small amount of nutrigel yesterday) since that 1/4 BBQ chicken breast on thursday but........ HE JUST ATE 3 BOILED SAUSAGES AND 4 RAW EGGS!!! Not getting my hopes up too much but its a start, first half decent feed since Bonnie died 3weeks ago. Typical Sibe, I go buy the nutrigel and A/D and he decides to eat proper food. Havent triedto force the A/D yet, I scared him enough trying to make him take the nutrigel, got a wet trouser leg for my efforts. Tried taking him out with us for a picnic today , he was REALLY intrested in the smell of the food but not eating it when we gave it too him. He ran around a little bit with my nephews and had a zoomie moment, was so great to see him enjoying himself. When we got home, I imediatatly ditched the kids (bad mother that I am) and went to fix him a meal since he was so happy. HE WOLFED IT DOWN! So happy that he has finally eaten something. Fingers crossed he keeps it up as he is looking even worse than before and is loosing his coat in a big way (you would think I had 3 Sibes blowing coat in my house at the moment). :D Finally a happy post! Ill see what tomorrow brings and see if I still need to push up his next appointment. Fingers crossed he's turned the corner!
