Dog In Car With Windows Up

OH and I were driving back from Coonabarabran to Sydney today with the dogs and stopped by in Dunedoo - now it was reasonably warm there - not too hot - there was a nice breeze. I was walking into a cafe and saw a woman sitting in here car with a swf in the back. Thought nothing of it at the time. When I came back out I saw the dog was in the back seat, with all the windows up - alone in the car. Sorry, one window was down LITERALLY about a cm or two.

I was so furious and stood there and looked around for the woman I saw - couldn't see her anywhere.

In saying this - max and jenna were sitting in the back of my car with ALL windows down about a third of the way, JUST enough for their heads to pop out but no more. I checked on them about five times while we waited for our food because I was paranoid it was too warm, I was also paranoid they'd get fed by some of the kids hanging around etc etc.

I THOUGHT the woman who owned the car and dog was in the cafe with us and was waiting for her food as well - I wrote a note to stick on the car saying she was being irresponsible and even though it didnt SEEM hot to us (humans) - dogs could die in the heat of a car. I then went out to put it on the car and it was gone.

I was SOOOO p***ed off she left because I was ready to go off.

:rofl::):mad :mad :rofl: :rofl: :D

I'm like you - I leave ALL the windows open enough for the dogs to stick their heads out, but not enough for them to jump out. Hopefully she was only gone a short while and doesn't make a habit of this. Its dangerous - what if something happened, like she fainted and got taken to hospital in an ambulance - her dog would have been left in a car like that for God only know how long!

that's exactly right. I mean it wasn't that hot - but even when its freezing i leave all the windows down. I just couldnt live with myself if something happened.

I'm the kind of person who would smash a window to get a dog (or baby) out of the car if they seemed to be at ALL i distress.

I'm assuming from your anger that this dog was panting heavily and displaying signs of distress?

not at all. but it doesnt matter. its irresponsible and shouldnt be done.

Says who? Where's the harm?

Sticking a note on a car containing an unstressed dog says "overkill" to me. Do it to my car and I'd be telling you to mind your own business pretty quickly.

me. there have been cases that animals have died and even children have died by being left in a car with the windows up. it doesnt matter if a dog is in distress or not - appropriate action needs to be taken to make sure the dogs dont get into a situation where they are distressed.

IN SUMMER

It's not summer.

Seriously, you need to start worrying less about what other owners do. You don't even know how long the dog was there.

Lots of dogs spend lots of time in cars outside of the danger months without issue. Hell they even sleep overnight in them.

Well I have to back Leela up in my own personal behaviour with my own dogs - if I have my dogs in the car and leave them alone to pop into the shop for something - even if its pouring with rain and it the rain will wet my car, I will leave minimum one window open enough for them to stick their head out. I would never leave my dogs in a car with no windows open or just one window open 1cm. Its not enough and it leaves the dogs at risk.

Sounds like the dog was alone in the car for a short period of time only

I left mine in the car for about 10 mins the other day (late afternoon) while I was picking out something in a shop a few metres away and only left one window down a few cms - I must be irresponsible.

Also - IMO, you should never leave dogs in a car with windows down enough for them to get their heads out - accident waiting to happen.

Yep, a great way to get your dog slapped with a Dangerous Dog order for biting someone who put their hand in the car to pat them.

And yes, some people really ARE that stupid.

Poodlefan is right, if the dogs are not distressed there is no harm, a window that a dog may be able to get a nose out and possibly bite a passerby is much more an offence, under the dog Laws, no offence has been committed until a dog is showing signs of distress, and in all my years or working I have never seen a distressed dog in a car, and I have seen a lot of dogs in cars!

J

Its not what maybe most people ( DOLers) maybe would do but one cannot put their values onto other people!

It is not my intention to put values on other people at all. Most of my conversations on here are disagreements because my values are apparently very different to those on here - which is fine. i happily and respectfully disagree with a lot of comments on here but i am certainly not trying to put my values on other people.

I also am, respectfully, not a smart a** about it either! I normally just stop replying in these threads because i have tried to get my opinion across and that is all i can do.

In my opinion, a dog should not be left in a car with all the windows up at any time of the year. And i respect that others have a very different view from me.
