MuckyPug Posted April 20, 2011 Share Posted April 20, 2011 (edited) For no other reason than pure curiosity ... we are thinking of DNA testing the pug! We adopted Max over a year ago from the pound. 3 vets have told me he is 100% pug. Jury's out for me. He is big .... very big for pug. And he has a longer nose - no squish face for him. When we are at Pugwood ... and he runs with pugs ... we have a hard time spotting him .. he stand beautifully, has a gorgeous curl to his tail, colouring is lovely - he's just bloody tall and not flat faced. So, we are going to DNA him - has anyone done this before? I've found a site that we can order the kit online and send it to them - or should I do it through our vet? Any experiences anyone? Leelaa17 Posted April 20, 2011 Share Posted April 20, 2011 I was about to ask for a photo so we can see! Also - I would DEFINITELY go to the vet - never do that sort of stuff yourself. Pay that little bit extra and get it done properly and professionally. I don't see any harm in it - it is expensive though, so if you have the money to spend then go for it but if you have a tight budget and you are simply curious then I would leave it for another time. Sandra777 Posted April 20, 2011 Share Posted April 20, 2011 Most people on here who have DNA'd their dogs for breed have come back with hilarious or just plain rediculous results. Me - I wouldn't bother, but if the money isn't an issue and you aren't going to worry too much which way the results go, then there's no actual harm. Leelaa17 Posted April 20, 2011 Share Posted April 20, 2011 I think it would be best to ask your vet - OR you could just ask them how much it would be to get a dna test done - see how much they will charge. $150 for the swab - you also need to think about suitable packaging costs to get it back to the processing centre etc. If you have the money - like Sandra777 said - it looks extremely simple so if you want to do it and you have the money then do it Link to comment Share on other sites More sharing options...

There's no need to go to your vet for a buccal (cheek cell) swab, which is how most of these tests operate, they're very, very simple to take. Blood test, yes. Cheek swab, no. As I said, he is a pound puppy who has us guessing, and as his owners we are just interested. When we take him out, it's endless ... "oh, what a lovely pug .. oh hang on, he's very big for a pug - what is he". I suppose we would just like to be able, with certainty to say "he's a ......" SwaY Posted April 20, 2011 Share Posted April 20, 2011 I went to a lecture run by this company last year on this very subject. They said you need to take other things into account not just looks... Size, characteristics and quirks etc. Sometimes there is a giveaway to the breed other then markings or looks. Not every puppy from the 1 litter will look the same, One may look like a parent the others may have no resemblance at all. Would I do it, No I would not waste my money. Some pugs can be quite tall (especially from other then registered breeders) Also having a bit of nose is not necessarily an indication because sometimes it not a "nose" but rather lack of nose roll and less than ideal muzzle makes them look like they have a nose. If you want to compare him to dogs close to the standard come to a Pug Show and see for yourself. Even then they don't all look alike. Save your money and just enjoy him. If you really want to spend your money you could make a donation to pug rescue and help a little fella like yours. Oh and come and join in the pug discussion in the breed subforums. We had some interesting results come back when we did it to a couple of shelter dogs at work I also had my Kelpie cross come back as a Staffy.. I'm about to post some photo's but when you mentioned no nose role I realised - no, he doesn't have any skin roll over his nose and if he did he would have a 'flat' face.
