charlie2011
Hello, I have a beautiful ten week poodle-x at home who i have only had for a week and i am really hoping to get him toilet trained asap. At the moment we have him indoors all day as he hasnt had his second vaccination so we soon hope to have him in the back yard with other (much older) dog. Anyway my aim for now is to try and get him to pee and poo in the one spot, or at least to learn not to do it on the carpet. We are lucky to have mostly tiles in his area and i have laid down a training pad sprinkled with attractant but this hasnt taken off. Its only very early days but just wondering if you have any tips. Ideally we want him to toilet outside but for the next month or so need an inside alternative. Appreciate your help :D Edited April 20, 2011 by Troy
tlc
Hi, Congrats on your new puppy. unless there is any reason to suspect your yard is unsafe or been exposed to parvovirus and other nasties, there is no reason why your puppy has to toilet inside. Typically toilet breaks after sleeping especially, all of mine always peed soon after a nap. You will notice signs of the pup wanting to toilet, circling, sniffing etc take pup out if you notice these signs. With my guys they went out around every half hour or so, so they had adequate chance to toilet and less chance of having an accident inside. Start as you wish to go on, if you start the pup toileting in the house you then have to start all over again with outside toileting. A puppy this young generally will not go all night without toileting, mine all displayed signs of wanting to go out during the night so out we went. But you will find puppy will go a lot longer at night that he will during the day. Good luck!
mish13
I am with TLC if your older dog is up to date with all its shots and you haven't had any visiting dogs, there is no reason why your puppy cant go in your own back yard. I would defiantly not leave it alone with an older dog and only let them together while supervised. By teaching it to toilet inside you are setting yourself up for big trouble Edited April 15, 2011 by mish13
Nekhbet
you cannot lock a puppy away for another month - why has the pup not had enough vaccinating? He should be about due for his second now? Or did you buy him unvaccinated? Puppies need to be outside in the fresh air experiencing noises and life. Take the dog on car rides, put it in a handbag and carry it around at least. You need to physically take your puppy to the spot its meant to pee/poo and encourage it to go, keeping it there until it does. If you dont want your pup to not toilet in unexpected areas contain it when you cannot keep your eyes on it. EIther a crate or a play pen.

Would love to see a photo of your new baby I agree with Nekhbet that your puppy could be outside during the day. I would also phone around and find a vet who offers the Nobivac vaccine so your pup can be vaccinated now and ready to venture out in 2 weeks for early socialisation. Just make sure your older dog can cope with a new puppy bouncing around all day. Good luck ;)

Ideally we want him to toilet outside but for the next month or so need an inside alternative. Appreciate your help He should be fine to go out into your backyard now- unless you've had parvo before? Did you get him from a pet shop? It can be quite hard to toilet train pet shop puppies or puppies that haven't been raised in a home environment Take him out every 30 mins, use a word like "do wee wees" or "quick quick" or "hurry up" when you see him toilet and reward him with a treat/toy/pats (whatever he likes best). You have to witness him toileting, you cannot just put him outside an assume he will go. If you can't take him into the yard for whatever reason, the same advice applies to the puppy pad or other toilet area. Keep him on lead so he can't wander off. Puppies at that age can't hold on very long and need really regular toileting. Unless they have been started by their breeder or in rare cases, there is no way you will have a fully reliable toilet trained pup until at least 4 months (if you're lucky). However, if you are vigilant, you should be able to minimise, perhaps even completely prevent any accidents from occuring.
kirst_goldens
check out the crate training thread in the puppy problems section lots of good tips in there also i agree pup and be outside i would suggest getting a big pen and set it up half on the grass half on concrete or pavers with a bed and lots of toys and treat balls and kong those sorts of things that way the dogs can talk to eachother but there is no way anything bad can happen i dont think puppy needs to be locked way... vets say dont let puppies breath without being fully vaccinated but dogs are put to sleep everyday from behavioural issues rather then parvo!! Be sensible with the places u take puppy - not to dog parks where the vacc status are unknown for example... but puppy preschools ask for proff of vacc so u should enroll in one with ur baby ;)
charlie2011
thanks for that, we have started to take him outside when we can, he isnt quite getting the hang of it yet but im sure we will get there. He isnt allowed on the lawn yet cos he hasnt had his 2nd vax so i have him on a lead on the pavers every hour or so and when he wakes/ has had a big play etc. Cos he is inside all day while we are at work its hard to be consistent. I am thinking of getting a square of astro turf to have inside that he will hopefully use. What breed are your dogs, they are cute!
Lab lady
Don't quite understand why you can't let your pup on the grass surely you, your other dog and any other member of the family would at time walk on the grass then on the pavers so what ever you are worried about being on the grass is more than likely on the pavers as well. I would suggest if you want your pup to use the grassed area to toilet in the future then you need to start teaching it to go there now.

Hi there, thanks for your response, He has had his 1st vax and is due for his 2nd vax in two weeks then i was told not to let him go for a walk or on grass etc for another 2weeks after that. I have been taking him out with me when i can, after work , all weekend and just carrying him in my arms which he loves then coming home every lunch break to take him outside on the tiles. I agree and want him outside ASAP, do you think i should get a play pen for him and put him on the tiles outside? Cos we have an older dog i am wary leaving them alone in the yard together and have been warned against that but if he is enclosed in a pen he should be safe. We start puppy school this week so i guess i will find out more then. I am also worried he will bark all day if enclosed in a pen but at least he is out in the fresh air... Yeh good point, thats just what our vet told us, think cos things are more likely to breed in the grass, ticks etc. I will definitely question it at puppy school this week.. Cos oor older dog (11yo) is my partners, i wasnt around when he was a pup and my partner was like 15yo himself so i guess were relying on others to advise us at this early stage. He is so cute, i just want to let him run wild! Poor little thing.

We have one that was my neices but he fits between the bars the cheeky little bugger! haha, so i need something he wont fit inbetween.

Sandra777
I would say your vet is referring to grass outside your home! A bit briefer than what I was going to reply! OP - so when you come home you disinfect your shoes, change all your clothing and wash it in special anti-viral wash? IF there is parvo in your area YOU can bring parvo into the house just as easily as a pup can catch it from going out themselves. There are precautions and there is paranoia, and I would say you have either misunderstood what your vet meant or your vet is a paranoid nut job! IF there are any nasties in the grass in your backyard, the other dog, or any person that walks on that lawn, will track it up on to the pavers, so whatever is there is going to be on the pavers anyway - or if there's ticks or fleas they'll just wander on up by themselves anyway. persephone
Your puppy has MUCH more chance of picking up 'something' from puppy school, than he does at HOME . Pups need to run on grass- they need to experience different textures/smells/ways of moving their limbs . They need sun and room to play. is your old dog having trouble with fleas/ticks? if he is not - then your pup should be fine!!

Nekhbet
yup grass outside your home, not your own backyard. As for 'nasties' that breed in grass thats just pure paranoia. Last lot of pups I babysat spent all day rummaging through my back yard and garden at 7 weeks of age, playing with my dogs, eating dirt, running around, falling over etc. Dogs can't be locked in a bubble to develop properly both physically and mentally. If your older dog is too rambunctious then put it in the puppy pen/crate with a bone to chew and let the puppy have some zoomy time around the yard. On lead play if the size difference is massive but they have to start getting used to each other.
