FORGET a man's best friend, in Australia it's more like a woman's best friend and a man's worst enemy, a survey has found.

The PawClub.com.au survey of more than 80,000 dog owners revealed four out of five Australian women spend more on their dog than their partner.

But it's not just money, with 77 per cent of women surveyed saying their dog also wins more of their precious time.

Sunnybank's Tegan Bensley found this easy to believe.

She said her dog Banksy was her highest priority and got most of her spare time.

"I work 10 hours a day, but when I get home I devote my three hours before bed to spending time with Banksy," she said. Tegan said she also spent most of her spare money on Banksy.

"I buy him collars, leads, toys, food, treats and I also put $50 away each week to cover any unexpected medical costs," she said.

The Australian Companion Animal Council estimates dog owners spent almost $3.6 billion on their pooches in 2009, a whopping $850 million more than in 2005.

Tegan said owning a dog was a big commitment, and should be treated as such.

"I think having a dog is like having a child," she said.

Tegan said her female friends were just as dedicated to their dogs when it came to spare time and money.

"When it comes down to it, dogs need more time and money than partners do."

Survey results, which have been broken down by postcode, are available at pawclub.com.au

Just WHO wrote all this horrible stuff !!!!

What about all that unconditional love that the dog gives to BOTH sexes in the house? Huh? What about that????

And the dog doesn't charge anything for it!!! It is given FREE - often with slobbery kisses.

Isn't the dog excited to see BOTH partners when they come home after a long stressful day?

Dogs are de-stressors and that is much more important than all the money that she spends on the dog. Think about all the money he COULD have been spending on anti-depressants and valium and prozac and the like!!!!

Dammit women, SHRED those groomers bills and toss out those dog boutique dockets before you get home - why, HE can spend almost as much at the hairdressers these days!

But hey, get that dog a really special bed that you can put right next to the sofa with a pigs ear, so there is none of this doggy-in-the-middle stuff.

Just remember to get rid of the price tag first!

Souff

 And the problem is???

Most of the time, my dog DESERVES more time than my husband!!!

When I was very sick the other night, it wasn't him nuzzling at my side and trying to kiss my face...

When I get home, I don't see HIM doing excited whole body wags and turning circles!!!!

My dog gets more time cause she gives me the unconditional love everyone craves for - and because simply, they rely on us solely for their needs - whereas hubby can mostly fend for himself.

But if you're reading this, I do love you too husband dear.

I'm sure I could find a survey where men would prioritise their Play Stations over their partners if the right questions were asked to the right group. I'd be asking on a gamer's website. Just like this was asked on a dog related one.

I really don't see the point in this kind of journalism. I'm sure its not to promote dog ownership.. more of a cheap shot at women in a "there are so many crazy dog owning women" kind of way.

I cannot relate to this enough. Its a little scary, my oh is starting to resent my little girl.

Really? How anyone could be jealous of a dog is bizzare to me....

I do spend a lot of time on the dogs but then so does my OH.

We still do things together but often the dogs are there too.

i haven't laughed so hard in a forum before.:)

My hubby is lucky to get away from his xbox when i walk in the door, but my 2 dogs are wiggling and tongues hanging out and doing zoomies when i get home.

But i do know who I love more

Both me and OH spend lot's of time with the dogs but I definitely spend more money on them than him. But then he spends more money on the cars then he spends on me and the dogs combined so whats the problem  Everyone has some type of guilty pleasure they priorotise spending money on.

This. OH spends money on his hobbies, I spend money on mine. His hobbies are his car and footy, mine are showing and training with my dogs.

It's a bit like asking a smokers forum what they think about anti-smoking laws. Bound to get skewed data.

That said, my dog is a great companion to me and I am glad to have the unconditional love. People can be so complicated.... :)
